Image based lighting

    The concept is derived from cube mapping, but still I don't know what purpose does it serve? what advantage does it hold over regular lighting schemes? Is it another form of indirect lighting? is it the same as light probes used for Global Illumination?

    Yes. But switch the hen and egg:
    Global Illumination is often done by using IBL.
