I'm curious about the persistent rectangle in Gamecube games

Has anyone else noticed a shaded rectangle horizontally centered on the lower half of the screen in many Gamecube games? I first noticed it in Wind Waker (though I'd later noticed it in earlier titles), and while it's easy to overlook most of the time, I'm still left wondering why it's there.

I don't think i've ever noticed that, do you have a pic of it?
It'd be more trouble than I'm interested in undertaking to connect my GC to my rig right now. If you've got a GC, fire it up and take a look. It's in a lot of games, but most apparent when you're sailing in the daytime in Zelda: Wind Waker.

I've never seen what you're describing. Sounds like a hardware problem to me, though I'm at a loss to explain how the same issue could appear on multiple units. What does this rectangle look like? Does it make graphics darker? Lighter?

Never seen it or heard anyone mention this before. And all my consoles output PAL-RGB because I'm quite serious about graphics quality...

So what am I supposed to look for?
