Insomniac got the background renderer from Naughty Dog (if I remember correctly, in exchange they rewrote it in some other language). Anyway, it wasn't a "top 10 background renderers" list. The IGN article says "best looking games," and they say they are considering technology and art.

It would be in my PS2 top ten. (Disclaimer: I own about forty PS2 games, and I've seen maybe a few hundred.) R&C1 to R&C2 was not a huge leap IMO, so I wasn't expecting anything big for R&C3, but it looks great. Maybe you should play it before passing judgment. ;)

People talk of Naughty Dog as though their technically adept developers, but the only game I saw on PS2 was the various Crash efforts. Crash Team Racing looked awful in my opinion. Have they progressed a lot since then? I'm not a huge gamer.

They didnt do a single Crash Bandicot Game for the PS2. Actually they dint do anything else than the Jak-series.

What you saw wasn't ND's doing, they said bye-bye to the Crash series years ago. Their efforts this gen went to the Jak series, but even so...you can still see how they've progressed. I mean, look at the first Jak game up until the last one....

Ah, that explains it. An atlernative dev takes over the PS1 engine and direct ports it, with no improvements. I think allowing companies to takeproduce sequels of your previous efforts can be pretty damaging to creditability. Without paying attention to the startup logos and animations, I assumed ND were still involved and pegged them for a poor production. Same with Dark Alliance 2 if you don't know what happened to the team behind DA1.
