How to get Windows 98 UFO:Enemy Unknown on Win7?

Yes, I'm in the PC games section - please don't lynch me! :p (BTW : I love the angelic music that plays here, and the white scenery, and how everyone's forehead seems that much larger than I'm used to...)

As for my quandry, I found an old boxed set of the UFO games in the loft and thought I'd play Enemy Unknown (XCOM:UFO Defense) on DOSBox. However it turned out to have been updated to run on Windows 98, and doesn't run. It all looks to be okay - sound, mouse, it's interactive - except the screen is scrambled. It also switches to full screen and renders the display spread across three stripey images with some corruption. I've tried the compatibility settings but it's the same results with or without. Short of a '98 VM, which is more trouble than I can be bothered with, does anyone know of a way to get this disc running on Win 7?

run the game alt bring up taskmanager end explorer process
or try the ddraw fix

or try this patch

your garbled screen is probably because the game tries to run in 320x240 or similar res

ps: the collectors edition is the one that supports windows is that the one you have ?
Yep. XCOM Collector's Edition from Hasbro, 1999.

I've got it working. Used you DDraw fix and W7DDPatcher found here. Although the mouse is too jerky to be pleaantly playable. Really this needs the old DOS version on DOSBox with upscaling. Sigh.

While it would involve buying the game again, Steam has the old X-Com games for sale integrated running in DOSBox.

At least a few days ago it was extremely cheap, I presume to get the hype up for the new Firaxis game.
