what i understand that proposed hack disables those specular textures and just is doing a constant pow 16, so D3 High and ULTRA Image Quality is then pretty the same ??? Quality. Cant you simply turn off another feature in the normal setup to boost D3 to your wanted performance ?

Are you running with vsync and triple buffering on? That impacts things. Some people are running with shadows off as well to gain further fps boosts.

Beyond that? I'd say it probably is coming down to processor(not just speed), bus speeds, and possibly hard drive speeds/configuration.

A little thought: IIRC, JC said that NVidia had driver optimizations in that could potentially break with slightest engine changes. Maybe Humus' change breaks NVidia's driver optimization and that's why the 6800 are slower? Maybe without NVidia's special optimization Humus' change would help 6800, too?

Humus, can you diagnose why HL2 runs slower on NV hardware when it comes out, and design a patch to boost performance by 40% on NV4x by altering shaders to take more advantage of the NV4x strengths? :)

it more looks like using NV Cards also the texture variant is as fast as the hacked shader using a constant specular instead of a prepared texture, so there is no difference (no improvement).

I'm pretty sure Nvidia will be doing that anyway, even if Valve already haven't with their "Five times more development time" on Nvidia hardware.

i am still thinking that Valve is a fair and good software developer and that their Source engine will handle all cards at its best like it did on their first HL, even when sponsored/supported by ATI - we will see.

Where to finf the sharper image code

I'm looking for the sharper image code, where can I find it? Or is it already in the latest one? My connection is slow so searching is allmost impossible..

*OFFTOPIC* but FYI: the performance on searching the net has almost nothing to do with YOUR netspeed and PC at all. if its slow its typically the server which does the search for you.

    AMD xp2800+
    Radeon 9800Pro
    512mb ddr

    Before Humus - cachefix:
    2xAA, 16xAF, High Quality, 1024x768, timedemo demo1 = 18,7 fps
    After Humus + cachefix=
    2xAA, 16xAF, High Quality, 1024x768, timedemo demo1 = 30,7 fps

From original D3, to tweaked D3, i get a ~60% performance boost... Thx

    Nope, you are wrong.
This "hack" just calculates the power in specular light formula instead of looking it up in tex. table.
To put it simple: the hack is MORE accurate than the Carmack's lookup.
But the problem is that mighty NVidia GPUs are much faster in texture lookups, that's why it's this way in Doom 3 and that's why it's faster on Radeon GPUs.

    9700 pre

I have a radeon 9700 pro and tried making the changes to the .vpf file above and just lost all the texture. The game did get really smooth though

    Re: 9700 pre

You don't have to edit the file, just use the updated tweak that Humus packed into a .rar file. Much lower chance for error that way.

I've been here since February. I just prefer to read and absorb the info (aka lurk ;) ) than to post.....

BTW Dig, when you coming back to Rage3d?? :(

With this i can only get 2 shots for comparison, and not even from a scene that I want to see?
On page 3 of this thread Kyleb showed 2 identical shots from (i think) the timedemo (demo1), on a point he randomly choosed, how did he do that? :?
