Help! What's the best way to backup a failing hard drive!

I'd like to copy three partitions, amounting to 110Gb, onto DVD-R, in such a way that:

1) The original partitions can be recreated

and

2) The loss of a single disc will not destroy my ability to retrieve the rest of the data.

you asked for the best way:
-spend 3k(about this much 2years ago) on sending it to a data recovery firm. Which will get as much as physically possible. My friend had to do this to get pictures of his daughter which he had no back ups of.

Sounds like you need something like Partition Magic. Note, though, it won't recover bad sectors - you'll need specialist data recovery tools to do that. However, it will re-create all your exisiting partitions and data from backup.
