Hello B3D.

For years, my country has banned lots of internet but i simply ignore it by using GoogleDNS. Today, after city-wide blackout for 1 hour, this trick no longer work. I still can surf using Proxy but i dont feel comfortable.

Any idea how to bypass country's internet filter without proxy and DNS?
VPN should work but it will add another hoop and cost :(

websites like reddit and imgur is banned due to its relation to: porn, religion, race, gambling, phising, or proxy.
i dont understand why they did not ban all internet altogether O_O or at least ban google country-wide.

it will inconvinient all people in the whole country and we can crack down the government like what the people has done a few years ago :D

Use other dns like the verizon one. 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2

Edit: basically Google dns is too popular so they check that.

That's pretty nuts. Do you have someone here in the States that might stand up a simple proxy DNS structure for you? In another month or so, I'll have my new home purchased and will have all of my virtual infrastructure up. I might be able to give you a quick and dirty DNS proxy (not a full web proxy) that would enable you to hit Google DNS but not use their IP directly.

My private infrastructure enjoys a ~98% uptime, which includes the downtime necessary for patching the environment (Microsoft Hyper-V host) and maintaining current code on the network gear (Fortigate 60C UTM edge, Cisco 3750x "core".) I could stack up a quick and lightweight Ubuntu or CentOS virtual machine that runs a caching DNS proxy without much fanfare. The internet pipe I'm purchasing will have 20+mbit worth of upload on a local Tier 2 provider, so it should be reasonably quick and stable.

At least it isn't like China where I believe they scan your traffic. This is purely blacklisting sites that have harmful content, which is mostly porn. Some popular sites like reddit and vimeo is banned because they can (and do) contain adult material (porn). Harmful content isn't limited to porn, but also something that promoting hatred towards certain ethnicity, religion, race, or social groups. The blacklisted sites list database is open for people to see and people can submit what website that they see infringing, which will be reviewed first.
Anyway, the verizon dns should do the trick and there are other dns that still can be used.

i tried 4.2.2.2 to 4.2.2.2.5 and still blocked :(

about opera turbo, yeah its a life safer. It unblocks :D but unfortunately it destroys picture quality.

about @Albuquerque dns proxy i will gladly try it :D

in the mean time, can someone ping reddit and imgur? i will manually add their IP to host file.

EDIT
addedd this lines on hosts and reddit works but imgur open with broken layout :/

198.41.208.138 reddit.com
198.41.208.138 www.reddit.com
185.31.18.193 imgur.com
185.31.18.193 www.imgur.com

seems imgur have more names to resolves.

You can always install hola extension (chrome, Firefox, probably others). But it works better on chrome than on Firefox.

Either they redirect all dns request to their local dns server (transparent dns proxy) or maybe you can try to flush your dns cache first by running this at command prompt: ipconfig /flushdns

You can also try using opendns and use 5353 for dns port. I don't know how to set that, but it can be done. This is only for opendns. I don't know other dns server that use different port (the standard is 53).

Edit: addition.

It's a proxy, but it can be used per websites.

Edit: so basically you can set it to use hola for reddit, imgur only

I finally have a house now :D

There are still issues with obtaining internet at this house, but those will be solved quite soon. I'll get started on building a caching DNS server for you, hopefully that solves your challenge. I can also go ahead and build a proper "full" proxy too, but consider that solution to be a last-ditch effort because it will always be painfully slow (due to the epic latency.)

I've been wondering too, since the UK has now blocked a whole lot of sites as if a couple of weeks ago. Adding to the ones they had already blocked some time ago. Obviously not porn related cause I'm an angel and I don't do that (and porn isn't blocked here anyway. But I'm an angel) but I do like access to content - mainly TV shows - that is simply not available in the country - even if I wanted to pay for it.
Without getting into the merits of how ridiculous the situation is, it would be nice to have an alternative.

My first attempt will be to provide an alternate DNS to use, in case that's how your respective countries are enforcing the block. However, I have my doubts as to how well that would work in practice -- as long as you once knew the IP, then you can build your own hostfile to make it work still. This makes me think they're doing some stateful IP blocking, something they've probably legislated to your web providers. As such, a full proxy is what would be necessary to get around that.

And while I'm happy to host a full proxy, the performance implications for you will be rather serious unfortunately. Streaming media is nearly guaranteed not to function properly, anything else that is latency sensitive will probably misbehave as well.

All of that aside, it looks like this coming Saturday may be the day when I get internet access.

Alright, any chance you're both using Windows as your browser OS? I've got a properly functioning L2TP + IPSec VPN tunnel that works directly with the built-in Windows VPN capability, you could start using it basically any time with a few quick settings. Building a separate VPN tunneling system can be done, but it really depends on the OS you're running. I'll probably stick with IPSec, but I can do alternate methods like IKE2 or such.
