It's simply not true, ingame at least. I don't know if the difference is due timedemo's vs flyby, but I have both GTX280 and HD4870CF and the GTX was much faster even with 4xAA in real gameplay.

8xAA with HD4870CF, the fps is dropping under 40 fps during heavy fire fights and explosions.

Well it depends on the resoultion :!

    2560x1600 8xAA/16xAF:
    ATi Radeon HD 4870 : 28,2
    Nvidia GeForce GTX 280 : 26,8

Also the test was done under Microsoft Windows Vista x64 SP1.

CF runs better on Vista than it does on XP. Also i don't know why your frame dips below 40fps , when mine never go below 60FPS in anymap.

Also to check if its not your cpu, turn post processing down to low and don't use hardware physic.

On my 4870 , it runs just fine :!

Also , did you buy UT2007 on steam , if you did add me to your friends list so we can play some UT2007.

I do not have a ATI, and I can only see the results of the reviews. If you tell me that really works in all those games, Ok . I have already read some new reviews with some games of the Unreal Engine 3 with AA . In any case, looks a bit like the loss of performance is higher than in the videocards of Nvidia. But not in all cases .

Stalker works perfectly at 40 fps if you only use 2X MSSA. This is rather more than it currently offers ATI. ATI has the best hardware for the AA , but if not have a good support for the Unreal Engine 3 and other engines with deferred shading, with good performance... bad thing

tuteja1986 , you have screens of STALKER with MSAA 8X - and with dinamic lighting /DX 9 render ?

I will do some benchmarking :! but will have to do on my ATI 3850HD since installed my 4870 on my lan machine because on Friday night to Sunday Morning i will be lanning at my friends place. the lan machine doesn't have stalker installed.

I thought earlier you only had hardware.fr numbers? PCGH uses the 8.5 Catalysts, the 8.6 ones and subsequent Hotfix have improved things there. See aforementioned hardware.fr review you yourself linked to.

How exactly has this supposed bad support for UE3+AA has been proven? Ignoring the fact that it's a hack that shouldn't have existed at all in the first place, from either IHV (CP forcing is a silly thing, should only happen in extreme cases).

I'm very happy that you're happy with your Stalker experience. That does not change that inferring much from it is rather hard, nor does it change that i'm not impressed that enabling 2X AA causes roughly a 50% drop on a high-end part. But I guess I'm odd like that.

mmm... I am dummy :! I thought stalker used 8xMSAA when you maxed the antialasing in game option , but it seem it only goes up to 4xMSAA max which i found out when i used the console game to see the AA level.

Screenshot i took turned too dark so i decided to take a in game screenshot feature. So i went to tweak town and looked at stalker console commands.

    http://www.tweakguides.com/STALKER_8.html

r__supersample : check the Antialiasing times
    r__supersample [1,4] : change in game Antialiasing
rs_stats on : game engine statistics, including FPS , Physic , Memory ... ect
    screenshot 1 : takes screenshot

I don't know too much about the game, but it would seem that you're enabling super-sampling here and not MSAA. It would certainly explain the huge drop-off in performance, and would also explain how the AA manages to work at all with a deferred renderer. Plus the console setting is called "r__supersample"...

I was playing in 1600x1200 16xAF and 8xAA. But it occurs just at certain spots. And my CPU is a 2,4@3 ghz Quad, so that shouldn't be an issue.
Also the Mass Effect gets jerky at times at 38-40 fps when playing with the same settings

    I've just the retail Ut3.

On a single 4870, I had to drop Mass Effect to 2x AA. Frame rate was too low during fire fights with 4x.

then what is it :! anyways , i was using the command to show AA level in the game.

    "
    r__supersample [1,4] - Same as in-game Antialiasing option.

But not is antialeasing in DX 9 , is only for DX8 . You have two renders in STALKER, DX8- with MSAA from the game , static lighting- and DX9 - with deferred shading and without MSAA from the game -

The command for fake AA - with blur - is this

    http://www.tweakguides.com/STALKER_5.html

But this all perphas is off topic to this thread

What does forced AA do to STALKER? On my 8800GTX, the game goes from running super smooth without AA, to running barely playable with forced 4X AA in the NV CP.

Multiple rendering passes would be my guess.

    Wasn't the previous gen's champion the 9800GX2?

Why not supersampling? Would also explain the catastrophic drop for 512 MB cards.

How about all of the above?

You are right, of course. I'd forgotten that it is MSAA which has "issues" with deferred rendering, whereas SSAA (used by Stalker) works just fine, albeit at a huge performance hit as we've seen.

I don't think it's super-sampling because only the edges get AA.
