Have you ever tried Virtual Reality?

As i see from different sites like Reddit, Twitter, Fb VR is very popular nowadays. I saw many games, videos, different sites and even porn for VR but have never tried it. If you have please tell me your impressions? Which one gadget for it is really good? What did you like and what did not?

There are no commercially released VR headsets yet (not counting the crappy mobile solutions) so peoples impressions of them will be of demo units and pre-release software only.

You also need to consider which system you want to use VR on. When headsets are eventually released your choices will be PC (Oculus Rift and HTC Vive) or PS4 (Morpheus). Each has different benefits so it's tough to pick a clear "best choice".

The CAVE system, which was more recent, gave a better experience, but it's not practical for a home environment.

Not practical? Are you saying you're unwilling to dedicate 50m³ of your house to a virtual reality setup? How disappointing!

The nice thing about CAVEs is that you can get about as high a resolution as you want, you just have to add more video-projectors—and very carefully align them. But yeah, in a home, you're going to want to wait for mature HMDs.

Used Oculus Rift first or second prototype, it is impressive to some extent, however seeing sub LCD pixels with the naked eye kinda hurt, also some input lag, and obviously being unable to see your real surroundings was quite a problem (want tea ? out of luck, want to grab something, like the mouse because you moved your hand to the keyboard, well not that easy, it seems you are using your eyes for that...), but other people like being half way in another world.
(Only half because having your avatar run while seated or helmet not capture translations breaks the immersion...)

So it's like "3D", definetly interesting, can't see myself caring about it for too long.

I got to play Elite Dangerous on a first or second gen Oculus for about an hour and came away very impressed, but this type of game (where you are fixed into a cockpit and the world moves around you - relatively) are currently the type of games which seem to work best, compared to say a first person shooter.

Rodéric nails the practical problems of VR and while I didn't play long enough to want to drink or grab a bite to eat, thinking about some of my extended play sessions where I'll want munch on sandwich or have a beer, VR would be barrier here. Although stepping out and stopping to eat and drink every so often would probably be good for you. Fifteen minutes breaks every hour is something I almost never do in extended play sessions.

I've only tried it 20 years ago, only for 5 minutes or so. It was amazing, so much so that I've always been waiting for the day for it to hit mainstream
