In reply to the post on the first page asking about far cry framerates, go to console (~) and type "\r_displayinfo 1". I might have the slash the wrong way.

Well, regardless, let's try not to get into another filtering discussion (aka Holy War). ;)

anyone care to guess what kind of difference I'll see going from a GF3 to an X800 pro?

Also, I always hear "the IQ is so much better" with the newer cards. What exactly does that mean, anyway? Is the image better quality, or are they talking about AF/AA? Thx :)

Potentially heart-stopping, please try to remain as calm as possible during the first few benchmark/gametests and if'n you have a heart condition keep a phone handy for that all important "911" call. (Personally I just keep a couple of emergency tabs of nitro, but I'm a bit on the paranoid side about such things now. ;) )

It means the image quality is superior with the newer cards compared to the older ones.

    Yes.

    You're welcome.

You didn't REALLY think I'd leave you just hanging with that, did you?

The difference in image quality is both in 3D and in 2D. I can't compare going to an X800 from a GF3, but I can relate going from a GF3 to a 9700 pro and I find the difference 'tween the two staggering also. (I love both cards, they're just from different generations.)

The 9700's basic window display was sharper and more vibrant than the GF3, and I had a pretty nice Visiontek GF3 that I had liked the IQ on.

On the 3D side of things there is just no comparison. 4xAA & 8xAF w/v-sync on and there ain't never no going back....I just can't game without AA & AF anymore and until I tried the R3xx series I had never really seen any good/useable AA & AF and to be able to use them and still have great framerates is just too cool....

...and your X800 will absolutely shame my now slightly aged 9700 pro!

For all practible purposes you no longer have any graphical restrictions, please enjoy it!

lmao thanks for that great reply. Seems as if I've got something to look forward to now ;)

I've also got the visiontek GF3. It's on its 2nd heatsink/fan combo and this one is now dying too. I'm building a new system around Xmas time, but I don't want to spend $20 for a HSF for my GF3, not worth it. But I've never had any problems with the IQ or speed on here. In fact, outside of far cry (wishful thinking purchase), the only problem I have is that 2+ smoke grens in CS tend to lag out my graphics. But with HL2 and D3 on the horizon, I knew that my GF3 would have to go.

I'd love to see a review/article come out that shows how far we've come. It may be hard to settle on a certain resolution/settings combo since older cards don't support much, but we could do it a'la [H] style (max. playable settings). Wouldn't you love to see a 6800u vs. 5800 vs. GF4 ti4600 vs. GF3 vs. GF2 vs. GF vs. TNT vs. Riva128 battle? :D

If you have a GeForce 3 I suspect the rest of your system is so old that upgrading to an X800 is not worth it as other elements of the system will bottleneck your performance.

I see where you'd think that, but I usually keep my graphics cards a little longer than most people. The only problem with my system now is that I have a single channel DDR mobo, but otherwise, my 2.4 ghz p4 @ 3.0 ghz should be fine, I would think ;)

Plus, I'll be building a new system this winter, and an x800 will be a nice fit.

I upgraded from a GF3 to a 9600 on black friday (yay BB $75 deal) and was floored by the IQ/performance bump. I knew "what to expect" but I really wasn't prepared for the jump in 2D more than 3D. amazing.

Now, going from the 9600 to the 9800XT (won in a contest, w00t) was much less of a jump, but I have to say that it was still very, very noticable in UT2k4, BG&E, and other games 'cause I could turn on AA etc w/o hurting performance.

    It's pretty. :)

I don't really see the possibility of me upgrading again (barring another "lucky" break) until PCI-E is well-established (read: bugs are squashed), which puts me at 8-12 months, probably.

Quick question, I have a 9800 pro and I play nothing over 1280 x 1024 and my fsaa is 4x and af at 8x in d3d and 16x in opengl. Farcry runs fine, all games run completely fine. Is there a reason to shell out $400 on a 6800GT or x800 pro? Will I just be completely cpu bottlenecked at the resolutions I play, or will i notice a large difference?

If you're happy with the way it games and it's running Farcry well for you I would say do NOT upgrade right now.

Farcry is probably the most demanding game out right now, and if you can play it comfortably on your rig as is I'd say you're going to be good to go for a while yet. Hold off until the prices start dropping or you really need it.

No one does right now, but don't worry since you can't really get either of 'em yet.

Personally I'm leaning towards ATi just because of the lower power/heat and I trust them more due to their recent history, but that's just me and I'm basing it entirely on personal preferences.

That, and ATI means red PCB. Red makes it go faster, just ask a friendly Space Ork.
