I play the 4 games of varied length. My views are

    Graphics
HL2 >>>>> Doom3 >>> Halo2 > Farcry (HL2 have the best artwork by far, the performance is very good too. Farcry have the worst artwork by far, a resource hog)

    Sound
HL2/Halo2 >>>> Doom3 > Farcry (Majestic tracks all round for HL2/Halo2, surround sound impact without the weakling Doom3 gunfire)

    AI
Halo2 >> HL2 > Farcry >>> Doom3 (So much of HL2 i played, the AI is nothing to shout about, Halo2 AI still reigns)

    Gameplay
Halo2 > HL2 > Farcry >>>>> Doom3 (shooting down AI is best part of FPS imo, here Halo2 wins even if the interior level designs do not have the variety of HL2. Doom3 is a disaster in terms of gameplay. HL2 hyped physics game is cool but so far dont think i will miss much with or without Havok. HL2 mandatory level interaction adds more to a FPS, but it may get in the way of replaybility. Also can you say naseua? Farcry seem to take some leaves out of Halo but the polish is not there)

They are probably both the same system demand wise, far cry being 4x more demanding. Just what I recall now, didn't do exact settings apples to apples benchmarks. If I can play doom3 with integrated mb gfx at 800x600 and it still looks good it scales well.

Let's see, finished hl2 with 1280x1024, 8x aniso, no aa, textures and detail at medium near the end otherwise they were on high. It didn't seem to be all that gfx card heavy a game.

It's not that the people don't see the geometry count is low, or that the texture details are lower than other games, it's that they don't care. I found the lighting was a nice tradeoff vs the texture and geometry quality for that game. Now, if HL2 used the same lighting and had to tradeoff geometry and textures, I think it would be really bad, because it just wouldn't suit that game. To me, Doom3 is a great looking game. But there's no real right answer on the topic.

I don't get how people do that sometimes...it's like they just search for 'Halo' or some other thing that interests them and just post willy-nilly without considering how long its been there for.

This is a discussion forum, granted...but a 2 year old bump could at least be justified with some serious discussion :???:

HalfLife 2 wins for me, followed by FarCry, followed by Doom3. Halo 2 seems simplistic in comparison.

Doom 3 lighting is cool, but as others stated, the feeling was too plastic. I much prefer Half Life's larger world and out-doors then Doom's cramped quarters (which are a symptom of the engine).

As far as polygons and textures go... HL2 was excellent. I never once looked at HL2 and said, wow that character sure looks blocky--which happened a lot in Doom3.

i like the farcry 'look' the best (outdoors anyway)...but then there are so few farcrys and so many doomish (dark/dingy) games.

give the guy a break, maybe he came from a forum where they always bleat about the search function (in other words, you can't comment on anything that has been commented about before without linking to it). lot's of places like that.

course maybe he's one of those bunnyhoppers too...excited about the goings on in the SP/MP blend thread...wanting to illustrate the appeal of this sort of technique.

I think we've been more than kind, don't you think? If this were Guru3d or Driverheaven, we'd have seen a few temporary bans allready due to flametastic posts...just suggesting that if he/she/someone wants to bump an ancient thread, but not really expand on anything or explain their thoughts on the subject, it's a tad confusing, that's all

I just pretty much consider a thread this old to be good for archival purposes and/or the occasional re-quote in some blown-out G80/R600/Some-ego-driven-topic discussion.

If I had to choose one game in particular out of the 4 in question for best Graphics, it'd probably be Far Cry. Sure, HL2 looks great (H2/D3 don't count in my books, they're pretty damn ugly), but when you get down the close-up details, there's really not a lot to see in HL2. In Far Cry, at any time you can stop to look down at the waves rolling up on the beach, replete with seashells embedded in the sand and the sun glistening off of nearby rocks, birds flying past and all. With HL2, it's a scripted bird, a low-poly ground surface, no water/land interaction, and a pretty crappy terrain texture 90% of the time...Far Cry just looks good from all angles really. HL2 looks good if you're just wandering on through, not caring/looking too hard for any neat little details.

And that is my opinion

After 2 years I still wonder what a ponty head is :p - and neeyik - spot on :D

And regarding the games - never played h2 so can't comment - but I always thought it was a pointless argument. HL2, D3 & FC all have strengths and weaknesses graphically, and it's just personal taste which you prefer. I was just happy that I was able to play three great games which also looked stunning (to me).

How many current games have surpassed this two-year-old list in the eye candy department? Not enough!

How many current games compared to this two-year-old list require more processing power? Too many!

I can only think of Oblivion and Call of Juarez..... maybe Just Cause for the draw distance but Far Cry is still much more detailed.

I would have said Just Cause not for only the Draw Distance, but definitely the atmospheric effects. It's got probably THE most realistic cloud system i've ever seen...storms move in from the distance, skies darken, rain pours down, sun shines through...it all happens so smoothly. And from way way up above the cloud layer, it's practically photo realistic at times. I remember at one stage I thought i'd become enclosed in a Cyclone or something, there were just massive walls of darkened cloud sorrounding me. Was pretty awesome though when I flew through it and into an absolute hell of a rainstorm. God I love rain.

i love intermittent storms in most games. adds alot of mood/ambience variety.

and i agree, just cause weather is AWESOME as far as any game i've ever seen/played. course the dev team previously (even used the engine) were developing weather simulators before they got the 'idea' for the game. ("Hey we could make a game out of this!"...lol)

though i go with farcry ground level detail, if only (personal taste) the tropical feel was well captured (minus bug bites) and beautiful.

of course i loved the 'vice city' ambiance as well.

maybe i have a coastal prejudice.

Well now, Gears of War and Crysis probably have the most impressive graphics improvement over these titles. I still think HL2 EP1 (and EP2 from the videos) look pretty damn good.

Edit, I'm taking back Vegas and replacing it with Crysis.
