Had the same problem when I used the web installer for QT, but the standalone version worked.

I tried a custom install from the standalone installer because QT has a bad habit of associating itself with alot of file-types it isn't supposed to. The result was no sound in .mov media.

I then uninstalled QT and installed it again (from the same stand alone installer) with the "recommended" settings and everything worked.

Now it opens .png files in Quicktime in IE....

    Cheers

I hate quicktime. It co-opts parts of your system (like png's) and always has that damn popup until you buy it.

I wish they'd never publish anything in that. (There's also a private place in hell for people who publish with .rm)

Hmm...odd, my QT viewer is well behaved. I think I updated it using the built in update function, maybe that let it keep my preferences. It is only associated with some graphics files, and lets other programs coopt it peacefully, it seems. The only thing checked is "Macintosh file types", and that stuck through an update I just tried (to see if it was my version that allowed it to behave better), which doesn't include .png. So, you should be able to easily deselect that, but you might need something like irfanview installed to easily associate files with as an alternative.

I have to agree with you whole-heartedly on both counts in this case! :)

I've successfully downloaded and played the 600MB version and it is superb--the video is a bit darker, but great.

Yes, talk about surprise. HL2 looks to be the hit of the year IMHO. And amazingly enough, it isn't just in one area. This game seems to excel in character facial animation, in texture details, in physics and in overall realism.

The 50MB Doom III video is impressive, but like I said earlier, it just isn't as real looking--and I doubt we'll have the larger more life-like environments demonstrated in the HL2 videos. Also, you would think that id would eventually tire of skulls and overt evil (fyi, I haven't seen any pentagrams, but I'm sure they'll be there).

I must say that I think the animation of characters/beasties in Half-Life 2 looks better than that of Doom 3 from what I've seen in those videos.

Yes, every time I try to drag the window while it is playing it crashes! Ugh.

Finally a really complete version too, all vids I had seen before were missing one thing or the part of the presentation, not this one, worth every byte of the d/l...

Couldn't agree more! All of a sudden september 30th can't come soon enough! ;)

I think we have to give id some credit here, after all they're currently one of teh last developers who's not hopped onto the "realism" train and I think that's a good thing. There are so many real-world or pseudo-realistic shooters out there or in development that I'm actually looking forward to some stupid but visually jawdropping sci-fi-hell of a game, its been a while since I played one of those! That doesn't change the fact that the HL2 impressions from this year's E3 have left me far more impressed than anything Doom 3 had to show though...

Media player classic, like some1 pointer in other thread, plays .RM and even .QT (probably provided u have installed quicktime, but the big deal is to avoid the <sorry moderators, have to say wholeheartly> FUCKING qt player </sorry moderators, have to say wholeheartly> ).

I take it you like this utility? I've never heard of it. Anyone else used it and confirm it isn't a mess waiting to happen? :)

You are correct. Realism isn't everything that is for sure. I just get tired of id's morbid singular facination with the same thing (skulls, pentagrams, etc.). Personally, it turns me off.

Strange, QT6 has been fairly flawless for me (the occasional crash, but no more than Sasami2K). Just open the file and hit CTRL-3 to full-screen it. Pity you can't overlay with black borders, but the HL2 video is widescreen, so it pretty much covers my desktop.

Actually... there was a pentagram in the E3 intro from last year, I think. The scientist in the middle of the big symbol--I THINK it was a pentagram. Couldn't tell though.

Then again, as long as you get to blow up John Romero's head for the travesty that was Daikatana, I will buy seventy-three copies of Doom 3. Otherwise, probably just one.

But the G-Man is purdy.. I just saw that video yesterday. Mmmm.... I wonder if you'll be able to use the gravity gun to pick up people in multiplayer and slam them into walls repeatedly?

I can see it now... At the lan party...

Guy One: "Dude, that's my coke!"
    Guy Two: "Oh well."
Guy One: *pulls out gravity gun* "Fine!" *picks up guy and slams his head into the wall about 37 times*
Guy Two: "Uh... you still have no coke."
    Guy One: *cries*
