R520 was different, wasn't it? I think it's neither R520 nor Xenos. I'd vote for some high-end DX9 GPU or some modern low-end GPU. The blocks are quite big compared to the entire GPU :)

    GCN?

No, I don't know, it doesn't look like any previous GPU die I have seen.
Any clue as for year or manufacturer? Maybe process node?

EDIT: if this mask fills full reticle then die size of this chip looks to be around a quarter. So that's around 125mm2-190mm2.

The overall structure is too simplistic for a powerful high-end architecture, me thinks.

it looks like a SoC more than a GPU,

    PowerVR SGX545

    maybe NV25 :p

It's an Imagination Technologies GPU and I am thinking Rogue perhaps?

    A whole SoC perhaps? :p

It's (fairly obviously) something from Imagination, but it's not something currently on the market, or nearly so in the case of Rogue. I'd get shot for showing the masks for those online  It's something a bit more obscure, circa 2005....

  18. So it's posted in the "3D architectures and chips" sub-forum so I'll assume it's a GPU.

Wikipedia says 2005 is the year of SGX530 and SGX520, but those aren't really obscure (except maybe for 520 which wasn't used often afaik).

Maybe an unanounced DX9 desktop GPU?

Hmm. One of the MBX variants?
