Another think that amazed me at the time in gt3 was the dust in rally courses, even today most of games don't show that much dust

Only other game i remember beating it was need for speed on ps360, but it ran pretty bad

Yeah GT4 pushed everything to the max. It was pure perfection. I loved the city tracks.
I was so amazed by what they have achieved. I was playing the game back then and thinking that even XBOX didnt have a racing game that was that impressive.
60fps, photorealistic visuals (for its time), amazing reflections and very detailed tracks.

You can probably safely assume it will look like GT Sport on PS4. The most interesting part will be the framerate counts on PS4, Pro and PS5. Generally we would expect a stable 60fps in all cases but you never know.

Otherwise it will mostly be resolution differences, no raytracing anywhere, and perhaps less draw distance and trackside detail.

Its insane how good GT4 looked
The reflections, the specular, the shadows how they behaved from multiple resources, the city detail.
The cars even reflected on the road

The power of the emotion engine.

There was that one racing game technically matching, probably beating gt4 ps2 that generation. It wasnt a pc game.
Did just about everything gt4 but better. Wasnt as popular neither as good gameplay wise though (personal opinion).

You are projecting a bit too much here, he was taking about the smoke effects. I don’t think you are. I had all consoles up to the PS4 era and pc and played all notable racing games on all of them (and I don’t consider NFS to be one).

If you know better smoke and dust effects don’t be shy, just post a video.

The PS2 just had a great resolution to frame buffer bandwidth ratio. It showed all over the place and we haven’t seen anything like it since basically partly due to the increases in memory, though in theory the 360s special memory pool did offer some cool stuff there.

But anyway, there is a lot of smoke coming from the tires in GT7 now as you could see from the drifting video.

I ment generally technically, Rally sport challange 2 does atleast match GT4’s graphics. No idea about smoke effects in rcs2, there should be videos/reviews of the game out there still. Doubt that the xbox couldnt pull it off though, theres games on that platform with some pretty amazing particle effects, be it dust, smoke and other effects.

Anyway maybe this retro discussion can be moved to the DF retro topic, i believe DF is going to cover this soon.

Rally Sport Challange 2, check it out and see what you think, i liked gt more but thats because i didnt like its gameplay. Gfx wise? You guys investigate :p

'Better' no idea, but not per-se much worse either. Quite generous particle/dust/snow etc effects, low res 2004/2005 video but ok:

Nice other effects aswell, even the sun-rise/dawn effect was quite good, no idea how that directly compares to 'ps2 framebuffer effects', the xbox did them differently (in hardware?).

Can we have these retro talks in a retro thread or something? Or maybe a general racing game thread?

    Slightly more ontopic:

Personally the most impressive visual aspect of GT7 to me is its (dynamic) weather system. Alot of attention went into the starry-nightsky, not really important in a racing game perhaps (youd be looking at the road i assume), but im not complaining :p

Edit: goes to show how important lighting is, more so then most other visual effects, assets or even resolutions. Its something PD has done extremely well since atleast GT3, it has not all that much to do with brute hardware power, but how they implement and craft the lighting system, aswell as matching art design, ofcourse.

    EDIT:

Maybe link to this research done by Sony in a collaboration with Zurich Universty

Or just event World Tour players vs machine learning AI but it has nothing to do with gt7 AI.

I understand and can relate to some of you who feels that GT7 doesn't look like a generational leap from GTS and rightfully so, with using the same assets due to cross-gen. What I disagree with is that the same people above also said Forza7 looks better (backgroud/textures) yet, I don't see it, unless there's a video comparison out there that is better then what I'm seeing (DF per John). If so, please send me the link. At this point, it boils down to the feel of the physics and personal preferences as both game looks good, even though neither are a generational leap IMHO. Concerning GT7, I don't think the improvement made from GTS is enough to justify paying $70 whereas GTS is basically the same game with a slightly inferior resolution and without weather dynamics, raytracing and other minor incremental tech assets.

The AI research was trained using the best GT pilot data maybe it will be a competition between very good GT racer and the highest difficulty level of GT 7.
