Most people who buy these Android TV sticks will be using them as small media players pretty much permanently attached to their TV. A bit of a waste of money to buy a Nexus 7 for such uses! The TV sticks have HDMI, built in wifi and USB (possibly OTG?), not to mention a microSD slot.

    At Mariner.

Thanks for the reply. I did some researching of the sticks you and Rurouni mentioned and will probably hold off for a few more months for something more user friendly. I use to have a lot more time to fiddle with gadgets, but work has me going for something simple that just works even if paying a little more.

Right now, I stream movies through my X360 or PS3 and am continually frustrated by the lack of codecs supported. It's inconvenient to have to hook up my laptop for those files not supported.

I was hoping the Chromecast would fill this niche...

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you and just don't have the time to play around with tech these days.

The fact that libstagefright has now been merged into the XBMC nightlies is a good sign, however. In a month or two, I'd imagine support for these Rockchip TV sticks will be much more stable and usable.

OpenELEC on the RK3066/RK3188 would also be nice but it doesn't appear that this is on the horizon at the moment.

  6. And then they'll probably sell it with either 8 or 16GB of mass storage, making it a tough choice to anyone who's not using an unlimited data-plan or roam frequently.

Without micro SD or 32GB storage I wouldn't even consider to buy this phone. I hope they don't release a 8GB version and hopefully only release a 32GB version (and up). You guys probably wondering why... It's because undoubtedly if they eventually release this in my country they they would only release 1 model, which is usually the one with the lowest spec. Anyway, I wouldn't buy a new phone for at least a couple of years since I just bought a G pro. I'm really thinking to buy the new Nexus 7 to replace my Mediapad but I want a bigger screen.. No news about a bigger new Nexus tablet?

What is it with these 13 MP cameras? I want better low light performance and the 13 MP cameras I've seen thus far didn't really deliver.

  9. Besides Nexus 10?

Yes. The Samsung Nexus never came officially to my country but the Nexus 4 and 7 are available here. Both devices came and supported from their respective maker (LG and Asus). Apparently Samsung doesn't like selling Nexus devices by them self.

Well I agree with your low light aspirations :) lg g2 has ois and has pretty decent low light photography, if the nexus 5 is based off of this we should be in for a treat.

HIstorically, nesxus phones have sacrificed the camera. Nexus 4 camera was substantially worse than the LG optimus camera. I would not expect the G2 camera in a 300$/350$ phone.

BTW the nexus 4 sound volume problem has n now been solved since about a month with 4.3
The GPS problem still exists though I think that's hardware so won't get fixed. But hey it's still better than some top line phones egg latest iPhone :) but worse than cheap sony phones :(

A sensible observation, we can expect conventional buttons and 16gb nand as well.

GPS issue as you need to be connected to network/wifi for it to locate you quickly

no network = 5mins ..... other phones eg cheap sony or expensive nokia find in 5 seconds
    with network 5secs

Is your phone rooted? If so, you can install FasterGPS or FasterFix to change to a local NTP server which should help the speed of your GPS fix somewhat.

Also, try installing GPS Status & Toolbox and clearing, then downloading new AGPS data.

A quick search around indicates that the Yahoo Weather app screwed with GPS on the N4 but whether that is an issue or not any more, I don't know.

As always, it's worth clearing the data on Maps or your other nav software in case there is some sort of glitch in there.

no not rooted, I do have 'GPS Status & Toolbox' installed.
the problem is I google cut costs by having a cheap GPS receiver in which only works decently when youre connected to a network (its google so this is no surprise), funny story last month in north thailand just over the border from laos and I stop off at the first place to get a local sim card to use internet etc. after an hour of her trying to get it setup she gives up and declare my google nexus 4 cant go on the internet "not internet phone" buy good phone, me 'um have you heard of google'
