Disused oil fields outside Baku

Some now disused oil fields in a suburb(Bibi-Heybat) of Baku, Azerbaijan. This is where the worlds first succesful oil well was drilled in 1846; but oil had been collected by hand for centuries. At the beginning of the 20th century Azerbaijan was producing over half the worlds oil supply. Prior to the petroleum boom whale-oil had been used for lighting but this industry collapsed in favour of much cheaper kerosene. Prior to cheap fossil fuels the steam car and battery powered electric cars had been most popular.

Baku was fought over in both world wars and was considered vital to the nazi war effort in WWII.

A large crater

This picture is from a peculiarly pock-marked stretch of desert south west of area 51 in the Nevada desert, where nuclear weapons were tested.

Circular fields of crops.

Certified anal-probing and alien-obduction free, these 'crop-circles' result from center-pivot irrigation.

I wouldn't say vital. It was important though. Vital was the destruction of the Red Army, which they grossly underestimated.

Why not link to Live Search Maps too? It usualy doesn't have the same images (some times more up to date) and is IMO finaly better that Google Maps now.

"google maps" doesn't classify Argentina, why not?

It's one big white space.

I believe Argentina is a rogue state... :D

That graffiti became an international news item when the movie studio decided to paint a Homer Simpson with a donut near it to promote The Simpsons Movie, and local pagans protested with praying for rains hoping to wash it out.

No. Those are just the pixels on a very, very large screen TV. Unfortunately, most of them are stuck at green.

are you kidding us?
No. There are also white horses carved into hillsides as well, but they don't tend to get used by couples trying to conceive :D

It is also one of the worst polluted places on Earth, yet the people live a surprisingly long time and have cleaned up their local environment by eating the carcinogens. (its true they were growing vegetables in the sludge pits used to evaporate and leave behind the worst carcinogens. They ate the vegies which cleaned out the soil freaky).

When they compose the maps from different satellite images it can look somewhat odd at times. Either that, or Toronto's construction workers aren't the most skilled. :p

CN Tower

Looks like leaning tower of Pisa has a strong competitor here. :p

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerne_Abbas_giant

"It has also been suggested that his large erection is, in fact, the result of merging a circle representing his navel with a smaller penis during a Victorian re-cut.[4] Because the phallus is 15% the height of the drawing (excluding the club), the penis length would equal roughly 26 centimetres (10 in) on the average male frame"

I'm so after the same op.
