Gmail banned?

I tried to change my e-mail address in the control panel, but got the message that the address (at gmail) was banned. Why is this? I mean, I suppose that it's gmail in general that's banned, not just my address...

A significant proportion of spam and "problematic" accounts use the likes of hotmail, gmail, etc so there is a block on all such email systems being used to generate a new account. I'm afraid you'll need to use a different address.

I was a bit surprised that my old hotmail address was OK, but then I guess that is because it was already registered here when the new rule came into play?
