There are already 256 mb, 300 million transistor 256 bit cards on sale for about $180. So these specs arent so unrealistic.

Yeah 22.4 GB/sec looks very low for those fillrate and shader op numbers.

8600 Ultra with a 256-bit bus & 512MB would be very nice. Time will tell. Perhaps Baron's birdy had a brain cramp and was tweeting about the 8300, instead. If it flies through again, pluck it for more information, even if its feathers get ruffled.

Also, Dude, "chinkmen" is not the preferred nomenclature. ;)

Reminds me of that Little Britain sketch, which I will not repeat here but was very funny as they were poking fun at the people who are inadvertently racist when trying not to be :D

I hope 8600 to be 256-bits. The nextgen games will really need it.
What will Carmack do with DX9 in his next engine?

I honestly don't think so, but I could be wrong of course. Consider this: 1.8GHz GDDR3 on a 128-bit bus is already a third of what the 8800GTX has, bandwidth-wise. Assuming half the pipelines, you'd be overdesigning it with a 256-bit memory bus; unless you want to argue the 8800GTX is badly bandwidth-limited, of course (which it isn't, btw!)

Now, IMO, low-end GDDR4 makes more sense than GDDR3 here, because otherwise you might be slightly under-designing it; it's hard to say without cards to test though, of course. We'll see...

    I understood Uttar.
If I understand correctelly G8X is about two things:
    - introduce a D3D10 class hardware.
    - consolidate the D3D9 class performance and image quality.

And we will start to see some D3D9 games with intense use of bandwith (many passes),
then I hope there is minimal compromisse in the performance side. But this is just a consumer hope.

Maybe they could surprise us with a 192bits design.

But will it still be a single slot design? My main concern for such high clocks is cooling, which is a big deal to the OEMs.

    Dailytech's G8x Design Kit Analysis

    • G84/G86 pin compatible with G73/NV43
    • Main power rails for G84/G86 are 1.2V & 1.8V, G73 was 2.5V
    • G8x clock generator runs at 3.3V, G73 was at 1.3V
    • G8x supports more than 4 GPUs (probably for Quad SLI + Physics)

If these are pin-compatible with older board designs, I presume that means there's no NVIO.

If that's the case, is NVIO a purely interim solution for the big-arse G80?

I think DailyTech made a typo in there.
    The G73 is pin-compatible with NV43, not NV40.

I recently received a Pentium D 820, mobo, and case for free (hand me down). I also will be using Vista. Should I wait for the 8600 (or ATI equiv) to be launched in the spring or should I just buy a X1950 Pro now. I'm leaning towards waiting since I still need to purchase RAM and a harddrive, and I am waiting for games like Crysis to come out. Is the 8600 looking to be substantially better than something such as the X1950 Pro, and if not will the DX10 features be worthwile?

I had the same dilema I decided to get a discounted 1900GT for now and wait for the G80 refresh. I am hoping when the G80 refresh happens it will drive the price of some of the 8800 cards or even 2600 or what ever the R600 will be. The reason for this is I am not convinced the 8600&8300 have the juice to run direct 10x games with reasonable setting s. It also helped I found out my printer and scanner are not supported by vista yet so I am in no hurry to upgrade my OS.

Inq has details on 8600 series (G84)
    • 128 bit
    • 160mm²
    • 80nm
    • 4500 in 3DMark '06
    • Production in March/April

    160mm^2?

    For comparison

    NV43 (110nm) - 150 mm^2 (143 Million Transistors)
    G73 (90nm) - 127 mm^2 (177 Million Transistors)
G84 (80nm) - 160 mm^2 (??? Million Transistors) according to the INQ (the GPU includes NVIO?)
    G80 (90nm) - 484 mm^2 (681 Million Transistors)

Comparing G80 with G84, G84 is roughly ~33% (one third) of G80 in terms of die size.

Im more interested in the specs though.
