I don't get it, why is this game going to be any good with a gamepad? You aim in it right? Therefore mouse is by far the winner. You probably also don't use much keys and even if you did keyboard would still be by far the winner. Gamepads offer nothing on a keyboard + mouse combo except the ability to use while say laying on your couch or away from your desk.

Gamepads offer analog movement control, and I can't imagine trying to roadie run across a map without analog steering.

On the other hand I'm worried the sniper and pistols will be brutally overpowered with mouse aim.

Can you shoot when in roadie run? If you can then possibly the issue, but if not then why wouldn't you be able to control your direction with the mouse?

This poses an interesting question -- RTSs use the mouse in interesting ways, but FPSs rarely do. it might depend a litle on the layout of your mousing surface but theoretically a right click + mouse to move system could work. Aim normally, shoot normally, but when it's time to move, hold right click and slide an inch or so to tiptoe, slide more abruptly to jog, or even more abruptly to sprint. As you return the mouse toward the spot you began holding the RMB, your character slows and eventually stops when you return. Make sense? That said, three different movement speed keys (similar to stance buttons in other games) combined with traditional WASD movement wold probably be less annoying (especially when moving and shooting or looking around).

That sounds vastly over complicated, instead binding the movement speed to your mouse wheel makes a lot more sense. Scroll forward to increase, back to slow, click it to reset to default. I believe Splinter Cell implemented such a system.

Also, again what makes the roadie run so difficult for a mouse and keyboard? Unless there is aiming during this, but then I don't see the issue of going into a first person like system and binding the crosshair to the center of the screen and base movement off of that, still used for running direction.

You can't shoot while running. I guess it'd be like trying to steer a car with a mouse? When you're doing the run, the steering is not very sensitive to left/right movement; kinda like setting your desktop mouse sensitivity to minimum and trying to get your pointer from one end of the screen to the other. At some point you'd need to stop and lift your mouse. Epic would have to adjust that I suppose, but it just wouldn't be the same.

Nah, no shooting during roadie runs. You just hold your dodge/cover button and the guy takes off in whatever direction you are pointing with your movement stick. I can't see moving that over to your look controls though, as you've got to be able to go in and out of roadie run smoothly while mantaining movement and having the controls swap from one method to the other would hinder that.

As for analog movement control in general, the Splinter Cell method works well enough for a tactical spy game, but I don't see it being practical in a shooter like Gears. I'd rather just tap the keyboard buttons to inch out and back in for sniping around corners and such like I do in pretty much any other shooter on the PC. I suppose that will likely have to work for roadie running as well, but if that is the case I invision issues with accedently sticking to cover even more than what can already be rather anoying with analog control.

I think the game would be too easy with a mouse. Half the fun of gears (for me) is mastering the aiming system. A bit like Goldeneye were aiming isn't just a means to an end, its actually part of the gameplay.

I think the combined use of two analog sticks for movement and aiming allows for more precision than many traditional mouse/keyboarders are aware of. Although Resistance is the first console FPS I've played seriously (finished the single player campaign just before last weekend), I've become very good in moving and running around keeping a fixed or moving target in my crosshairs. Before that I've always played PC fps, from Wolfenstein 3D up to and including Quake 2 (after that I had my fill). I even played Descent, where I thought I'd rather cleverly configured my driving wheel's pedals for forward and backward movement.

That said, Epic, can't wait to see what you've done with the Sixaxis!

Wh would have thought Gears of War would arrive on the PC at the same time or maybe even before UT3!

So much for all the claims of PC gamers having to wait multiple years for it! I wonder if this means we could be getting a nice Halo 3 package under our christmas trees next year?

    At 1920x1200/60fps like Gears

Actually by then we will be gaming on G90's or G100's. Make that 120fps
