Game Streaming Platforms and Technology (xCloud, PSNow, Stadia, GeforceNow, Luna)

How can PS4's lag be worse? It's lower level hardware access with more room for optimisation.

 

UMA? PC having brute force? Or just ~ an extra frame lag (triple buffered?)

 

Wow I didnt notice Tag 2 had such a high input lag.

 

Well yes... And they can use the same 7nm silicon for all three....

But more probably ps5 & ps4-pro will be at 7nm and ps4 will remain at 16 nm ....

 

They already compete with Google. It's called PSNow. Stadia is a GAME STREAMING SERVICE and not a CONSOLE so it shouldn't be discussed. If someone wants a GAME STREAMING SERVICE, they won't buy a console, and if they want a CONSOLE, they won't subscribe to a game steaming service. If Stadia takes off, there's not a single thing a console can do to compete because the reason for Stadia doing well will be the value proposition which is completely different to a console, the same as people streaming Netflix instead of buying movie discs. If Stadia takes off, it'll be through PSNow that Sony will have to compete.

 

Just explain this to a 10 years old boy who just want to play.... As both serve to play both are in the same market... Specifically PLUS and NOW of Sony are in cuncurrence with Stadia. As both PLUS and NOW run into a console the console itself is in cuncurrence indirectly with Stadia....

 

A person wants to play games. They choose to either buy a console, in which case Sony is competing with Nintendo and MS with PlayStation 5, or they choose to use a subscription service, in which case Sony is competing with MS and Google with PSNow.

It's exactly the same as watching movies. Someone wants to watch movies. Therefore they want disc-based movies and buy a disc player, in which the competing platforms are Panasonic, LG, Sony, etc. or they want to stream movies in which case the competing platforms are Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.

PlayStation is not competing with Stadia; PSNow is.

 

So an hypotetical diskless PlayStation... Is not really a Consolle following your logic as it may be used only through NOW ... ?

 

An optical-less PS that can play downloaded titles would be a console, same as XB1SAD. A PS branded box that can only stream PSNow titles wouldn't; at least, such a device wouldn't be a competitor for XBox and Switch, even if people call it a console.

 

Ok got it... Console is something that can play games also if not connected... And is not general purposes as a PC... That's ok. How do we call this only online gaming boxes ? I guess people mostly will call them consoles...

 

Streaming boxes. What people call them is immaterial to the discussion. An Amazon Fire TV dongle isn't in competition with a Panasonic BRD player whether it's called a streaming device or a movie player or, very wrongly, a BRD player, or even a fish. People wanting to play BRDs will buy a BRD player. People wanting to stream movies will buy a streaming device (which may include a BRD with streaming). People wanting to watch movies will choose one or other, or both, because they aren't in direct competition.

 

you give people to be more rational than what they are and more you give them to know the distinctions that are understandable only trough some tech knowledge... I'm sure Stadia's Box will be called console and that will put it anyway in competition in the real market with properly called consoles... someone could even prefer it as Netflix can be controlled also trough the phone... so "a better integrated and cheaper console".... yes there is also the need for a fiber connection... so people can be lead to buy also that: with the money saved on ps5 you can upgrade the connection....

 

Okay. Let's say people are lining up to buy Stadia boxes because it's more economical and flexible. What can Sony do to make their PS5 more competitive? Put in more power? No use - these people want economical and flexible. So what? How do they compete with a cloud service using a fixed console?

You can play Stadia through Chromecast ultra. Don't think there will be a dedicated box?, but there must be a controller to buy.

 

There's literally a Stadia controller you can buy. It communicates with the server rather than whatever you're streaming to. It removes some latency.

I think MS can compete on the same ground.... Sony maybe not.

So Sony should follow a bit more the Nintendo's way: that is make nice games to play in a more traditional way, also single player... All this microtransactions and such in the long run will be boring....

 

And yet slower paced narrative driven single player games probably fit better in a situation where there will always be some input latency. Also long games are the sort people may wish to dip in and out of possibly away from home.

 

Isn't streaming a bigger threat to handheld gaming?
