Huh, nice coincidence, I discover this thread after posting about a free game over at slackercentral. Many thanks!

Free 2.5D game, The White Chamber (wintermute engine)

    Game engine: http://dead-code.org/home/

    The game: http://www.studiotrophis.com/site/projects/thewhitechamber

    The download: http://www.studiotrophis.com/site/downloads

    The Wikipedia pages: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wintermute_Engine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_Trophis_Production_Company

    Two reviews: http://www.justadventure.com/reviews/WhiteChamber/WhiteChamber.shtm http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/06/arts/06game.html?

Played fine on my Vista system. Addictive experience. I achieved a good ending. I think the above reviewers were able to totally tune out the game's shortcomings. I give the experience a solid "B".

Walkthroughs are out there: http://www.gameboomers.com/wtcheats/pcWw/whitechamber.htm http://www.justadventure.com/Walkthroughs/WhiteChamber.shtm

A dedicated fan even posted some walkthrough vid's.

I should mention that the game has had several updates over the years.

Not bad, it supports my monitor's resolution of 1920x1080 and I really like how it runs from the folder I extracted it to.

I should mention, you don't need Q3A to run this. Everything is in the download. Runs on my setup of Vista.

    Edit: This looks interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_of_Padman

    It's from this list. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Id_Tech_3#Projects_based_on_the_GPL_source_release

Top-down 3D space game ported from the Dreamcast version if im not mistaken.

I think this game was posted a few years back on some thread in the forum, thought i'd mention it since it's not in the list and is free, oh and it is still in a somewhat alpha version runs acceptably on 5year low end machines with the visual fx turned off and typing /texturedetail as well but it will still slow down in heavy screen action due to the excessive alpha texture blending pushing weak hardware like in my case a laptop IGP chipset. Last report from one dev said the animation and hit system was being re-worked, maybe that will improve performance a little, recent machines will have no problem whatsoever with this game, and you can increase the default resolution by typing for ex. /resolution 1280x1024

I personally think the game in its current state becomes boring after a 1 hour or 2 even with a decent group of players, the game suffer from heavy grinding and upgrading your ships will not be possible just by reaching a certain level wich makes things worse, u will need certain items, some wich u will find yourself others you will have to trade with luck you might get some for free from higher lvl players wich happens occasionally on the first ship upgrade possible at lvl 10.

Anyway it deserves a try, allot of the gameplay mechanics and areas are still missing but its somewhat promising specially if you are bored of constant fantasy mmo/rpg's out there.

Tips: don't play in solo, warp to delta3 and join the biggest group of ship/players u can find.
P - shows a list of players in the current instance/room.
Z - shows a map of the galaxy and its sectors by color each with a few specific types of things to hunt.
M - shows u a list of objectives depending on what area you are in.
NumLock - usefull later on in case u want to lead a group of followers, it will move your ship foward untill you Rclick in space or turn it off.
*edit: for more tips just press f1

    Usefull websites with help/tips/info:

ArmadaHQ (wiki) some of its information is outdated, basics and most stuff is correct
ArmadaOnline Usefull to see the current different ships in the game, its systems and other charateristics in detail at different system levels.

Gametap has announced it is moving several of its free games to its subscriber model on January 22nd. Since they are now effectively, timed free games, I removed these from the list. They also forgot to include Blood Omen 2 and Tomb Raider in that list but their site lists these games as becoming subscriber-only after Jan 22nd so I also removed those.

I've also added alternative GOG.com download links for BASS and Lure of the Temptress. These require registering with GOG.com but it's well worth it.

The 3D Realms Website has news that several old Apogee games are now being offered as freeware, stressing that this is being done with no promise of any sort of technical support, as these eight games are all from 1990 and earlier, and will probably require DOSBox and perhaps other finagling to get them running. The catalog of releases includes five games that are freeware for the first time, three games that are being released as freeware along with their GPL source code, and a bonus release of a Flash edition of Kingdom of Kroz II. Here's word on the freeware releases, including an in-joke for George "Broussad":

Hard to believe our first game is 22 years old now, but that's what was built out of Scott Miller's bedroom in Garland, Texas all those years ago. Here is a complete list of what is being released today:

    • Kroz - Our first ever game, a text adventure game by Scott Miller
    • Arctic Adventure - a CGA based scroller game by George Broussard
    • Dark Ages - an EGA based scroller game by Todd Replogle
    • Monuments of Mars - a CGA based scroller by Todd Replogle
    • Pharaoh's Tomb - a CGA based scroller game by George Broussad

We're also re-releasing some previously released freeware games.

    • Beyond the Titanic - Text based Infocom style adventure game by Scott Miller
    • Supernova - Text based Infocom style adventure game by Scott Miller
    • Word Whiz - A text based trivia game from Scott Miller

    Free MW4 "Very Shortly"

Inspired by a question in our forums, we found a follow-up from a couple of weeks ago on MekTek.net to the announcement in early July that a free release of MechWarrior 4 was coming "soon." It turns out the announcement was almost as unexpected for them as for the rest of us, and they have been working ever since to remove DRM from the game, update their matchmaking software that's taking the place of Microsoft's now-defunct Zonematch service, and finalize the software that will allow the game to be patched after release. Other issues must also be resolved prior to release, including completion of legal paperwork and the completion of proper server infrastructure:

The unfortunate aspect of all this great news is that all of these new developments could have been ironed out before the announcement but they were not. Our partners felt an initial announcement was necessary and so did we. We plan to release Mechwarrior4 for FREE when developments are completed and considered stable. We are also waiting on legal paper work from lawyers and as anyone out there that has worked in the professional industry knows, something of this magnitude takes time on all fronts. MekTek is not receiving any financial support from the partners regarding this release and obviously no one can quit their daytime job to get the job done faster either. The release has entered beta status and will be delivered to the world very shortly. MekTek is supported through donations from our community and thus far we have received 50% of our goal to cover server infrastructure costs. We hope the community will continue to support us during this very busy time to ensure we have the best possible hardware in place for this release.

March to Baghdad, Episode 1: Decision at Tallil Air Base

A complete standalone wargame set in the US/Iraq War built on ProSIM Company's Air Assault Task Force engine, hoping this will inspire interest in other ProSIM games that are sold for cold, hard cash.
