Forza 2 will feature more than 300 drivable cars, a modest upgrade from the 230-plus available in the original game, with more customizable parts and options than the original game. In addition, players will be able to race against up to eleven other players online, up from eight in the original. Best of all, and the most important news for Forza freaks, the game is due for release this holiday season....

.... Though the demo was pre-rendered, the car models themselves looked to be pretty close of what the cars will look like in the Forza 2 engine--at least we hope so. Just before the pair of cars crossed the line, the footage backed up and the paint on one of the cars began to peel off, revealing a plain white automobile underneath.
Next, the car further deconstructed until it was just a line drawing of an automobile, then slowly reconstructed itself, showing the various parts that comprise a real car--presumably a not-so-subtle method of showing the various parts and components which you will be able to adjust in the Forza 2 garage. Everything from custom hubcaps to shocks were shown and, as the car eventually recomposed itself, it was also given a brand new coat of paint. Again, an obvious method of showing off the massive amounts of car personalization the Forza series has come to be known for.

It concerns me that Forza is a fall release yet was not shown in realtime. PGR3 no-showed last years E3 and ended up ok. But then again it took GRAW another 3-4 months to get into shape from similar circumstances. Maybe they are just focusing on other games... but I tend to be cynical and think otherwise.

As for the CGI, heh, CGI ain't going away any time soon. And as a gamer I don't like it, it looked nice and from a PR perspective that is EXACTLY what I would be doing. More polished, ready to ship games shown in realtime and then slam home CGI for the stuff not quite ready. E3 has become about hype. The key now is making your CGI believable enough there is not a big gap between the trailer and the shipped product and mixing in enough high quality real games to cause confusion.

Wasn't there real time footage of it running in a loop towards the end of the press conference? I think when they were talking about the Xbox Live Anywhere stuff. Or was that also from the trailer (didn't look like it...)

I wonder if the wheel will require a power cord? I just get the impression the to shake a whole steering wheel requires lots more power than just rumbling a wireless controller. Maybe a bigger or dual battery packs?

EDIT: nm, found it in the press release. good old vibration with a battery pack, full force feedback with AC power.

Why show realtime and get insulted, when you can show CG and be praised. MS learnt that lesson last year, unfortunately.

I think it's more a matter of priorities.

#1 - game out this fall

A demo will apparently add weeks to the schedule.

Besides, there are enough racers out there already, and Forza has a pretty hardcore following.

My two cents. ;)

update Forza 2

Game is already at 60fps and MS is adding the Wheel support to PGR3 possibly too
sounds cool

could be a showcase holiday racer

Dan Greenwalt is not happy about the Forza Motorsport 2 trailer. None of what you saw at Microsoft's E3 press conference Tuesday was using the in-game engine, nor did the trailer convey the passion for cars that Forza is known for. And Greenwalt, the director of the upcoming Forza title on the Xbox 360, is not happy about that at all because he wants you to know that his game rocks way harder than that video clip.
...

There is no playable version behind closed doors and there is no in-game footage of any kind. There is only the trailer that Greenwalt's team didn't even work on, that crazy concept-montage prepared specifically for E3. So here is what we do know. Forza 2 will be released this holiday season. The game is already running smooth at 60 frames per second, Greenwalt said, and the goal is to have the sequel to one of the highest-rated racing games on store shelves before the end of 2006

...Because Forza 2 is geared toward car and customization freaks, Microsoft is adding a photo mode too. You can take pictures of your ride and post them online, sharing them with your friends. Will there be MS contests for coolest cars? We think so, but Greenwalt wouldn't say anything more about Xbox Live. He did smile when we asked him, if that means anything.

...a perfect way to highlight the recently-announced Wireless Racing Wheel 360 that will be launched with Forza 2. We don't know if the two will be packaged together -- we assume you could buy them separately and there will be some form of package. With sophisticated rumble capability and force feedback, the wheel will give gamers a three-dimensional sensation of control, Greenwalt said. For instance, let's say you take a sharp turn. If you let your hands off the wheel, it will automatically self correct. Also, with force-feedback, you will feel when the car is off traction during sharp turns. Greenwalt mentioned that the all racing games down the line will have to be compatible with the wheel as part of the certification process, and there is talk of updating PGR3 with a patch so it works as well. Racing fans will be very happy this holiday season.
