3DM GT2/3 use the same rendering process, with the same number of lights (I think), but lacks the UltraShadow stuff. (and for those surprised at the AA performance drops - why do you think I've been using GT2 for AA/AF performance analysis in the reviews for the past few months?? ;))

What the heck is going on here. Does that mean if you overclock your card 10% you will not improve performance a bit?

    Right!

Any new board has a stellar performance, though the 6800 series outperformed. Now, what really the question is where can you buy a X800XTPE or 6800U right now! :?

Yeah this generation is really messed up. The supply of XT/Ultras are ridiculously low for some mysterious reason. And the GT is cleaning house since it's the most powerful card readily available. Although I'm sure that will change after this announcement. Maybe the X800 Pro will leap in sales once the GT price gouging begins.

I guess it means that you'll start to see rendering artifacts a lot sooner (MHz-wise) than with previous games.
Which spells trouble for me. :(

    Thanks Anaqer and gokickrocks: :D

Any sorta time frame on that CS:2 gokickrocks?

It is my understanding that Quake 4, Return to Castle Wolfenstein:2 and Abuducted will be released sometime this year, though I could be wrong. And then I also read a post that suggested that the former Q3 Engine games like: Call of Duty, Lucas Arts: Star Wars series and possibly EA's Medal of Honor could also be in the wakes.

Now considering that past successes of those games, I dunno... but I'd say my money is on Doom 3 Engine and OpenGL doing just fine in comparison to Direct X. I hope that isn't the case however.

I certainly hope HL2 fills the void for Massive Multiplayer Gaming. FarCry is a great single player game, however I'm not too impressed with the online gaming aspect of it. From what I have read, I'm not alone either.

Again, thanks for the info! 8)

Have any of you seen the Counterstrike:Source Video that showed up a few days ago? It's pretty incredible.... enough to go back to playing counterstrike.......

The ~100 meg BINK one? I did.
Thoroughly disappointing, except for the water and the player models the level looks like crap. I know it's not supposed to be more than a minor polish added to already existing designs, but why should we be bothered then? Might as well just call it "CS 1.7, now with water!". Meh.

It did look good in some ways I think, but the geometry is kept a little low (and Aztek is not the most creative level too :D ) because of the need off fast paced multiplay. The source engine is awesome at all levels.

Btw, are those benchies taken with ATI's new openGL driverpart?!

    Regarding Doom 3 titles.

Picked this up off the Doom 3 forums -

    Title: Quake IV
    Developer: Raven Software
    Release Date: TBA
    Announced: August 10, 2001
    Official Site: None
    Known information:
» Basic development started at the beginning of 2001, since Raven has been working on three other games by that time actual development started Q2 2002.
» Single-player focused, will feature basic multiplayer support.
» Continuation of the storyline from Quake 2.
» Same GUI system will be used as in DOOM3.
» Vehicles will probably be included.

    Title: TBA
    Developer: Human Head
    Release Date: TBA
    Announced: TBA
    Official Site: None
    Known information:
» All we know is that in April 2003 Human Head have been looking for a level designer to work on their current project using the DOOM3 engine, Could be coincidence but Evil Avatar reported in March 2002 that Human Head started work on Prey which was in development by 3DRealms since 1993 and canceled ~5 years later.

    Title: TBA
    Developer: Nerve Software
    Release Date: TBA
    Announced: TBA
    Official Site: None
    Known information:
» Entirely new franchise, not confirmed if it will be using the DOOM3 engine, but we can be sure they are. Quote from their site: "Nerve is currently crafting concepts and ideas in collaboration with Id Software for a future project".

    Title: TBA
    Developer: Gray Matter Studios
    Release Date: TBA
    Announced: TBA
    Official Site: None
    Known information:
» Same thing as with Nerve, nothing known, just this one quote which probably means it'll be a DOOM3 engine game: "we are hard at work on something new and very top secret... if we told you, we'd have to kill you..."

    Title: TBA
    Developer: Splash Damage
    Release Date: TBA
    Announced: TBA
    Official Site: None
    Known information:
» Splash Damage has been co-developing the multiplayer maps for DOOM3, now they started work on a new full game.

None of this is set in stone, but there's a good chance that the above companies will be working on titles based on the Doom 3 engine, along with id's new "IP" that would make 6 (unconfirmed) titles. My opinion is Doom 3 is one of the most (if not THE most) anticipated games of all time, and barring it turns out to be a flop, I would think other developers would see the possibility of anything developed on it being a hit. We may not see the Q3 numbers but I think we'll see quite few. From a personal standpoint, I would hope we see alot of titles based on it.

As far as the benches go, the aa + af performance is surprising, Ati should have done their rewrite a long assed time ago. Maybe the assumption was made that OGL was going to die out.

    5 games, not bad.

A little of sarcasm, interesting to see Ati coming with beta drivers and Nv with official ones  please don't hit me

Well, so far we have Quake IV, Call of Duty 2, Return to Castle Wolfenstein 2, something from Human Head, something from Splash Damage (maybe RTCW2 but I sure hope not), and something from Nerve. Conveniently all published by Activision, but hey. :D

Q4 and COD2 are slated for fiscal year 2006 (April 2005 -> March 2006) according to yesterday's Activision conference call, and I'd also be very surprised if Raven don't whip out Dark Forces 5 and Soldier of Fortune 3 after they're done on Quake and the X-Men game.
Is that quote from before or after it was announced GM are doing the Call of Duty: United Offensive expansion? Something in the back of my mind tells me it surfaced just after Trinity was cancelled.
Isn't the new IP for the next engine's launch title?

RTCW should be an interesting one to look forward to. I'll be intruiged to see how CoD uses the engine though.

Actually 6 (id will be starting work on a new game soon)
And I'm sure that number is going to grow.

From what I understand they are going to do a whole new game, nothing related to their previous games, but using the Doom 3 engine.

So if Ati had the beta 2 years ago, what were they doing?

And.... with all these talk of relatively poor OpenGL driver of ATI's, and the official DOOM3 benchmark, I find this ATI's recent interview quite funny.

I'd love to see Monolith make a AvP 3 using the engine.

Thought I'd point out that ATI's performance may be inhibited by a lack of optimizations for Cg. I believe that currently ATI relies on Nvidia's backend?

ATI doing instancing reminds me of 3dfx and "It's not 16-bit, it's 22-bit color!" back in the voodoo3 days :)

I second that, AVP2 was one of those examples were the storyline, atmosphere and the engine delivered quite a delicious package.

AVP3 with the D3 engine would be like the holy grail for it.
