Pretty ironic that the first game released with HDR support doesn't have support for these effects on the R300 and up. And i still wonder if Half Life 2 will ever support HDR, and if it will, will it work on the R300 ?

Though you could argue that it was still a good thing that it was brought up back in those days cause the less people that got the NV3X the better.

Perhaps i should comment on the patch also, i would say that most of the indoor shots are a bit overdone. The outdoor shots looks great though.

Most of the difference is due to diff gamma&contrast setting, you can get
pretty much the same picture on non openexr hardware:

Looks very close to the same in the second pic in the box.

I wish they had moved the fraps counter to the right for the HDR pics.

Here you can see what it looks like if i change the HDR pic (right) back to default contr&gamma.

Not totally the same, but with more effort it would be pretty close. Anyway, i think you'll get my point.

No, it isn't settings, the gamma and contrast change dynamically based upon the level of lighting.

Please post the settings that you are using for the gamma and contrast?

    Thx

Mmm, isn't there a way of doing this without openexr? (if you bind hotkey's (Ati-tool) you can do this in-game while playing, however, not very practical if you must adjust often. )

I estimate -10% gamma and +15% contrast, but you can try this better by yourself, can't give you exact values.

I still think that this "HDRI" effect only makes the game look bad... oversaturated, overbright mess. It really is a shame if such a gimmick effect is considered to look good...

I take it you have not seen it in action, eh Laa-Yosh?

    Hardly the same thing.

So when you enable HDR, it ups the gamma/contrast? Or is that just you doing it?

No, he just missed the point of HDR.

If you had an infinitely precise image, then you'd have no problem adjusting it after the fact. The problem is that the image you're basing upon is 8 bits per channel, which is the same precision you display it.

For good control without loss of precision, you should either : integrate the adjusting controls inside the rendering (what Far Cry does), or store it in a larger precision (see description of openEXR here : http://www.openexr.com/about.html ).

You can always use lower levels of HDR like 3-5 instead of 7.

To Unknown Soldier: I'd like to see those HDR screenshots on X800.

Anyone have an answer as to how GFFX can do normal map compression while R300/350/360/RV350/360/370 can't? Uhh, wtf? Is Crytek implementing everything half way or what? These guys seem like the masters of feature creep.

    Hi pat777

When I would enable the sm2bpath = 1 (patch 1.2) i'd see that some of the things would be alot brighter. i.e. in the beginning when you walking towards the room you see a skeleton at the bottom of the ladder. with that setting it was definitely brighter. Without it was dull. Only problem was that the textures outside went all wonkie.

With patch1.3 sm2bpath = 1 kinda did the same thing, for the first time .. then for some reason after that it never seemed as bright.

I've reinistalled windowsxp about 3 weeks ago and haven't reinstalled Farcry .. will do so and try it out again. Will also try to find the FC patch 1.2 and try that again.

I think you might have gotten used to the increase in brightness. If I get used to nvidia's digital vibrance I need it. But if I turn it off for a long time I think it looks washed out.
