From what I gather, It's because of the specific way NV40 has implimented it's Floating-Point Filtering/Blending. I think to save some trasistors/die space it wasn't implimneted through the entire pipeline (ie not in MSAA part).

Future cards that have FP filtering/blending (R520, NV50) should hopefully be able to do this sort of HDR with MSAA.

You prob want to look at :

    All shots were taken with:
    r_Glare 1
    r_GlareQuality 2
    r_GlareTransition 10.0

Setting r_Glare to 0 didn't affect rendering. I did very limited testing though. Perhaps it is restricted to certain scenes and I was looking in all the wrong places.

    r_HDR* variables include:

    r_HDRBrightOffset
    r_HDRBrightThreshold
    r_HDRDebug
    r_HDRFake
    r_HDRLevel

Haven't played around with those yet.

r_HDRLevel seems to be the one to play with. Default is .6 but from what little looking around I did .4 is much more convincing.

    Thanks wireframe :)

Too bad I still have a lousy GF4 Ti. Would love to play with HDR commands to get it just right, the way I want it 8)

The mountain bug on the pier level is still there :( ( look for the grey stuff on the bottom right of the mountains, follows the helicopter [suspicious] ) Any ideas what causes it?

They did fix the dodgy jagged shadows though 8)

Someone has experimented with HDR and Geometry Instancing over at Ubisoft forums:

I just can't get into Far Cry. It is just too fricking hard!! While it is a beautiful game to look at, I think the gameplay sucks in comparison to my favorite games. It took me like 2 days to get off the frickin Carrier. I think BF Vietnam, BF 1942, Halo and Splinter Cell are much more fun to play. I don't think I have ever bought a game and not finished playing it...Far Cry may be my first.

Multiplayer is slightly better but my XT PE chugs along with low frame rates unless I change the settings bigtime. Not very impressed...

Far Cry's AI tends to punish straight "run & gun". You need to go from cover to cover (including darkness and shadow), kneel or crouch for better accuracy to catch enemies as they come into sight, use vehicles and the sniper gun to reduce the odds in your favour, use the thermal sights, etc. Basically it's always better to fight from cover than to get caught out in the open.

That's what I actually liked best about the game, the AI did seem actually pretty bright to me. I kept feeling like I was being hunted or hunting, rather than just killing everything that moved while bunny-hopping.

Good game, mebbe I will reload it tonight and give the new patch a run with the 70.41 drivers and see what the what is.... :|

Yep. For instance there was one level where I was sneaking down the right side of a valley. Loads of mercenaries were hunting me, and I would keep picking them off and falling back, but they would close in on wherever I was shooting from or whenever they saw me out in the open.

I soon realised I was running low on ammo, and there were too many of the enemy. So I shot a few rounds off to attract their attention, and then as they closed in I fell back, then sneaked over to the left side of the valley while keeping under cover and in the shadows. While the enemy were trying to find me on the other side of the valley, I sneaked past them by staying under cover and dodging their patrols after attracting their attention to the wrong place.

It's that kind of gameplay experience that (for me) significantly raised the bar for games like HL2 and D3, epecially once you get your head around the fact that you have to consider every encounter as a tactical situation. It's not just that the AI is better, it's the fact that better AI creates an environment where the gameplay is better and more fun, giving you a playing experience that simply didn't exist on older titles.

Hopefully Far Cry is an example of the kind of thing we can expect from future titles in terms of interactive environments and NPCs.

"Tagging" enemies with the binoculars first makes it WAY easier to overcome them. Then they show up on the little radar thingy in the corner of the screen, so you know if one's getting hostile or such (they turn into a red blip).

Man what a trip how the eye varies with people. People are touting HDR as "wow".

It's a wow alright. Like, "wow" how unnatural can you get". From all the screenshots I've seen, no way would I use it, I think it looks terrible.

If you say so. I just don't buy it. All the screenshots can't be that far off. I haven't seen one single one I thought looked natural.

It is overused in a lot of situations, but I think its pretty cool. Sad they probably didnt have the ability to do a more global method which applied to more than just one line of cards, but its still nice. The fading sun effect looks pretty cool (from that movie), more realistic (and a lot brighter) than the lighting effect for the sun in cs:s.
