I am sure some of the PC gamers might have missed this one: Eurogamer has played an E3 build of Fallout3 (on X360) and they were downright disappointed.

    EG Fallout3 hands-on

This was expected, anybody who thinks Bethesda can make a good Fallout game is delusional. Hopefully they'll release an editor so that modders can remake it into a decent game, like that did with Oblivion.

I can ignore poor art, bad animations, drab environments, but for following up on a series like Fallout the writing has got to be solid. And that's always been my main concern with Bethesda handling this.

The only hope I have left for pc rpgs is Dragon age.

I remember when BG1-2 came out and was supposed to revive the dead crpg genre that had stagnated for years already. It did, but it was a singular event and never was repeated again since then.

Dragon age looks and feels a little bit like BG again, so heres to hoping.

I have nothing good to say about what Fallout3 has become though. I have even less stellar things to say about the completely useless, shitty reviewers who have more or less killed entire genres of pc gaming and populated it instead with endless amounts of 3dee fps clones.

I don't know, there was also the Icewind Dale games, Torment (the pinnacle of CRPGs), and a few years later releases like Troika's Vampire game, the Gothics, etc. I'm looking forward to Storm of Zehir far more than Dragon Age at this point. Mask of the Betrayer was absolutely fantastic and with the talent Obsidian has in-house now SoZ could be a great game. Personally, my most anticipated game at this point is probably Diablo 3, especially if Battle.net 2.0 has integrated VoIP support.

But, yea, the RPG genre is definitely limping along these days. When a developer like Bioware has to tout Dragon Age as this big PC title you know the dev market has shifted to the consoles (for those who didn't realize this or were burying their collective heads in the sand).

I wouldn't mind the shift, if they were making decent CRPGs there ...

Frankly, with how Mass Effect is even simpler than KOTOR1 (and the new gameplay changes not exactly great), I wouldn't put much faith in Bioware at all.

ME was certainly RPG-lite fare, but it's also a polished, fun game. Increasing skills had apparent effect on gameplay, conversation choices, while burdened with a predictable mechanic, gave different results at times (not often enough), and you could reach different endings of the story. Hardcore RPG fans nitpicking these games to death are no different in my eyes than the hardcore simmers I watch in action over at a certain website. They can unknowingly be their own worst enemies when it comes to their beloved respective genres.

Kotor at least was a semi ground breaking game and made a genre in a sense. Thats fine, and maybe one extra Kotor like game is ok, but Bioware basically followed that style to the exclusion of what they did best.

My timeline is screwed up I think, but Torment was afair earlier than BG?

You would think Indy studios would jump on the chance to make those old school turn based CRPG games. You don't need huge investments in 3d graphics, but instead need good writers (which there are an abundance off out there).

    No, BG1 was 98, Torment 99, and BG2 2000.

Indeed, a story (incl. choice, consequences of said choices and moral dilemmas and a certain amount of freedom for the player to define his own character) is really important for RPGs. But keep in mind that today's gamers also expect huge persistent worlds, etc. Frankly, if you look at Gothic III (while still a great game under all that patching) that was its downfall. A much too ambitious "world engine" that screwed up the great story telling (incl. the important ingredients) Gothic I&II had, IMO.
