Contrary to most people, it seems, I love Oblivion. I play it on an AMD X2 4400+ and 8800GT, and I find the performance quite acceptable, if not exactly stellar. I blame my CPU for any sluggishness.

I'm now thinking of buying Fallout 3, seeing as "Oblivion with guns" sounds great to me. Does anyone have experience with Fallout 3 on a system of similiar CPU speed?

FWIW I can't tell the difference when I overclock my E6750 to 3.2GHz. This game isn't very system intensive...

Oh, very good links, thank you!
I will run at 1920x1200, but I can accept lower quality settings. Looks like I'll be ok.

Me too, using an AGP 7900GT at 1680x1050. Not sure how Oblivion compares to Fallout 3 in the grand scheme of things, but I assume it's "close enough".

does anybody know if Fallout 3 will run on my PC?

the specs are pretty dated but it's ...

    P4 2.4C
    2GB DDR400 dual channel ram
    nV 6600GT 128mb AGP 8x
    2x Western Digital 7200rpm HD
    clean XP pro install

i've also read that the 2.4c overclocks very easily to 3+ ghz would that help me achieve some performance in newer games or is 6600GT still going to hold me back?

ideally i would like to run in native 12x10 w/ medium settings if possible. would it be playable?

My suggestion would be to try it or obliv. If you can run obliv you should be able to run f3.

Your GPU doesn't meet the minimum requirements.

i originally had to run oblivion on a 6800gt it was ok on medium no shadows on a 3hgz cpu
but isnt the 6800gt nearly twice the power of the 6600gt ?

The 6800GT is quite a bit more powerful than the 6600GT IIRC. Think it was 8 vs 12/16 pixel shaders and almost twice the vertex shaders though slightly lower core frequency.

There's nothing wrong with your CPU, or the graphics card AFAICS. I play on a X2 3800+ with a Radeon HD3870 with every single setting on maximum and the game runs well. I get occasional stutter outside when the game first loads, but that's all.

nebula : 16 pixel shaders plus its 256bit as oppossed to 128bit for the 6600gt

fallout may run better than oblivion as there really isnt any foliage to speak of (oblivion had grass nearly everywhere)

With the notable exception of Oasis and Tranquility Lane, it's pretty barren - also, you can quickly turn foliage rendering on or off entirely with the tlg console command.
