Since we've barely mentioned it here: wtf with the ATI d3d9 issue? How could something like this make it past QA?

Seems like Bethesda has always been understaffed in the technically competent programmers department. Don't get me wrong, I love their games, but weird and honestly inexcusable issues seem to plague their every release.

Why do people keep thinking this is Bethesda? Obsidian did this.

Oh. Well then Obsidian is understaffed with technically competent programmers too

Probably because of the big bethesda sticker on the box.

Actually IMO Bethesda has come a LONG way since their Morrowind days. Oblivion was extremely polished compared to early Morrowind. The older TES games and their Terminator games are even worse.

I don't know much about Obsidian's history beyond KOTOR2 being a wreck. NWN2 didn't seem to be much of a hit. How was Alpha Protocol?

Yeah I don't know what the deal is with that but it doesn't just affect ATI cards, NV is affected as well. Does anybody know what the technical issue was? I read somewhere that it was something to do the the facial animations on the NPCs but I haven't heard anything more detailed than that.

Regardless it was a huge PITA, I was messing around in my graphics settings for a good 1 hour b4 I figured out my low FPS was caused by a bug in the game.

Other than that though it's been bug free, I think OP should play in english.

Well, I certainly am not supposing that they're releasing something that's broken on every machine out there. Still, it's completely broken running on my computer, which admittedly isn't top-of-the-line, but isn't esoteric either (Win7 32 on i5 + GTS 250).

It's entirely possible that they just botched the international release. A worldwide simultaneous roll-out I suppose is pretty tricky. On the box it said that the Polish version requires a download from Steam and the installation did take a better part of an hour. Perhaps something went wrong amid all this complexity. Whatever it is, what I have installed right now is fubar and unplayable

In the meantime I'm just going to go get drunk.

Yeah I started on an ati 5770, and then switched to an nvidia 470, it runs like ass on both while on the strip. I didn't know about the dx9 issue...are there any negatives to doing that fix, like maybe losing some graphical features?

It's Obsidian, VERY well known to put out buggy products. This is why I am waiting.

It wouldnt run for some people you had to Go into Device Manager, locate Human Interface Device and temporarily disable HID-Compliant Consumer Control Devices to get it to work

I found this quote (allthough I had no problems)
"Obisidian Entertainment’s debut into the current-gen console and PC scene with Alpha Protocol is, to put it simply, a mess. Although Alpha Protocol boasts a solid gameplay with some engaging RPG elements mixed into the fray, it is the number of gamebreaking errors and crashes that sends gamers into fits of rage."

The fix changes something with the way faces are animated, I'm pretty sure it doesn't touch any of the graphics features and I haven't been able to notice any differences in the faces aside from the way better fps.

I've played the game for 5 hours or so now and I'm not sure how much I like it. Fallout 3 really gave you the feeling of coming into a destroyed world and you had to learn everything from the beginning. In NV life is pretty good. Also the factions are nowhere near as interresting as the ones in FO3. Basically you have a bunch of different raider groups which are no fun because really, who cares about a bunch of dopehead criminals? and the ''army'' is weak and not cool.

Also the game gives you too much stuff too fast. Before I knew it I had flamers and automatic laser rifles and I only just turned lvl7.

Some of the new systems also don't really add anything.
Depending on your actions you can get friendly with certain factions but most of the time it's just annoing because in most cases you will end up killing all the raider types and save the good people. The campfire idea is nice but it takes a high skill level and lots of items to make certain things and I'm not sure what the actual use is. The only thing you really will ever need is health and there are plenty of stimpacks for that. Also I don't like what they did to the terminal hacking. It always was a guessing game but now it turned into a time consuming guessing game...

Also you don't have as much skillbooks anymore. There are still some but mostly now you have magazines that up your skills for a very short amount of time. Pretty useless and it would have been much more fun to scavange for skill books like in FO3 because atleast those would last. Why bother for a skill upgrade that doesn't even last a minute?

Something I noticed btw that I didn't think was the case in FO3 is that when you raise a level, after using your skill points you don't get to pick a extra skill with every level.

    ?

Did you play Fallout and Fallout 2?

Btw, Fallout 3 gave you the feeling like everything is destroyed yesterday, not 200 years ago.

No but I don't see how a 12 year old 2d game will be relevant for a modern game.

And yes timewise FO3 might be a bit weird but than again if there is hardly any clean water or food, lots of radiation and super mutans and different peopel fighting each other with no government it's not that far fetched that they didn't really start building things up again.

Anyway, NV just lacks atmosphere for me up to now.

Huh? Its never been a guessing game. I think I've one failed once, EVER. Only had to use the fourth try a number of times I can count on my fingers. If you know what you are doing, its all logical deduction and elimination. Even choosing what word to try first is all about looking at all the words and finding the one that constrains the problem the most.

If you want to comment on the world and its state then knowing the first two games is fairly essential.

It has been a crash been pretty much crash city for me. At first it was crashing every 20-30 in. I was saving like crazy (seso). Now I have about 15 hrs in and it doesn't crash as often. Also I have sound glitches, and it seems to always flash the "press V to use vats" in the upper left corner, even when there are no enemies around.

There have been several already through Steam. Mainly scripting fixes and fixing the broke autosave. Nothing about crashes people have but that hasn't affected me and a lot of others.
