eight shader units for R520

Is R520 going to feature unified pipes or is that further down the track?
Unified shader pipelines architecture is expected for the R6XX, if they don't change the roadmap by then.

Unified pipelines from ATI will exist before WGF, but not on the PC.
Aha. ;)
Interesting. Looks like PCs will have to do catching ups with console graphics in next generation.

Not sure if I can hold out until r600 series(supposed to be the next real architecture or whatnot?). Im on a 9800 pro as it is. Will r520 be a signifigant improvement over r420?

8 = 6 * 1.33
X = 16 * 1.33
X = 21 ... so either 20 or 24 :), or 16 with more ALUs per pipe
Don't forget about RV410 (8/6) ;) But i agree. R520 will most likely has 24 pixel pipelines as NV47.

Yeah. Current rumors are saying that the R520 will be to the R420 what the R420 was to the R300, 'cept maybe a little more.

doubtful the r520 will double the r420 performance wise. 50% seems more realistic.

It looks like that it is more than a rumor:
