Doomsday fears spark lawsuit

The builders of the world's biggest particle collider are being sued in federal court over fears that the experiment might create globe-gobbling black holes or never-before-seen strains of matter that would destroy the planet.

Representatives at Fermilab in Illinois and at Europe's CERN laboratory, two of the defendants in the case, say there's no chance that the Large Hadron Collider would cause such cosmic catastrophes. Nevertheless, they're bracing to defend themselves in the courtroom as well as the court of public opinion.

Think how awesome the researchers would feel if they created a black hole? They would be super stoked for about a few picoseconds!

A randon thought: Could it be one of the reasons why we haven't made contact with any other civilisation, maybe they ended up destroying themselves before anyone could reach them. Maybe all advanced civilisations are destined to self-destruct themselves.

Basically it's almost impossible for LHC to create any black holes. It's quite common to see high energy particles coming from space with higher energy than what LHC can create. So if LHC can create tiny black holes, the earth should be dead for million times.

Any black hole that was created, if it were even possible, would be no more massive than the particles used to create it; it's not going to consume the planet. Not only that, the black hole would quickly evaporate due to its small mass.

Hey, I was joking around and you just had to bring science into it, didn't you?
