you should find another boost if you turn vsync off. vsync is for image quality, not benchmarking.

I'd still like Far Cry even if it's graphics weren't as slick, I liked the gameplay and the enemy AI. :)

On Doom3 and the dark thing, I don't think I can criticize it for being dark since the thing is INTENDED to be dark as hell. There is a level that is pretty much pitch black except for your flashlight so you have to spot enemies with the light and quickly switch to your gun and fire where you think they went to....then whilst firing it lights things up a tad so you can aim better.

Even if I don't personally like it that is just my preference, the game was obviously designed to use limited lighting as one of its elements.

I think D3 is pretty good. I think it still retains that Doom feel. I dont know how they did it byt the the emersion factor goes to Doom over FC.

Thats exactly how I feel... I am still enjoying the game but it just feels to linear/scripted to the point that its annoying. You have no way of going around enemies or sneaking anywhere. I really like the whole pda thing and the vid's/soundclips really make the game more imersive.

Dissapointing but still fun, just TO SCRIPTED.

Again, no surprises about the scripting here, JC and the crew stated it in quite clear terms that they're not going for total interactivity at all, but rather aim for a horror movie feel.

yea I was expecting it as well... just not so blatent! Game is great fun in 30min-1hour sessions but if I play it anymore then that at a time I get rather board...

I am usually the type of person to play through a fps in one sitting so its odd for me.

Yep and I think they did a nice job. The people raving about how bad this game is, sound like nothing more than a bunch of partisan fanboys.

IMO it is nice to see a company push graphics in a different direction. It seems good looking graphics today too often mean nothing more than high poly counts, detailed textures, and some cool looking water effects.

D3 makes sacrifices in areas in order to push lighting, physics, and sound. That’s why you see the people who think lighting is a gimmick or that super high poly counts are a requirement complaining that they are underwhelmed.

Doom is a very moody game. You will want to jump out of your skin more than a few times playing it.

I just tried to remember the feeling when I played Doom 2 for the first time...it was scary, it was pure adrenaline and I was really kinda addicted to it. I just hope Doom 3 can give me that kind of feeling.

All that innovation talk got really boring. Doom 3 is just what it's supposed to be, a straight shooter. I enjoy shooters for what they are, so judging by your comments I believe I will really enjoy the game :D I don't want to sneak arround enemies, I want to kick some demon ass here

I didn't really like FarCry at all. IMHO this is more of an engine demo than Doom could ever be. I was just plain bored. Wide open areas are nice, but should not always look like the same level over and over again. Huge levels are okay, but spending 20 minutes to get to some point and then back again to push a switch in order to be able to proceed because these are 5 "virtual" miles away isn't of any fun to me.

And: bad guys randomly hiding behind bushes != superb AI

why they don't offer a setting for ultra high quality, compressed textures is beyond me (taking same size as current ultra textures, but compressed to get more detail)

My opinion is that while the engine is really good, and sound is excellent, the constantly trudging through dark corridors to the next square room, trying to see what is going on is just.. well... boring. It's kind of tiring to have no variety at all. It's just relentless, and the limited environments (which remind me a of Quake 2 layouts) means you can only play thorugh the linear maps in a very linear fashion. There's no attempting to play the game in different ways, because there is only one way to play. The issue isn't with the engine, it's the way it's been used and the game they made around it.

So it's impressive to look at and listen to. It's a really slick engine with some really nice touches (like the PDA and the touch screens). It's impressive to experience. I'm not sure it's enough fun to carry the whole game through.

So you like running around in cramped rooms in the dark , that look like the same level over and over again and spending 20 mins to get some pda access code and then go back again to click on a door switch to open it is fun ?

And bad guys randomly hiding in walls or in dark corners 1= superb AI

Well, Doom 3 was never supposed to have superb AI. A brainless monster is meant to attack you like a brainless monster, not to go get help from its comrads while hiding behind (the fabolous and ever-present) crate, whatever. Try it in the real world with a crocodile or a lion, you'll see what I mean :)

I wasn't bashing FarCry, it's just not my kind of game. I simply like plain, in-your-face shooters. I think the whole genre-mixing wave got out of control. Just like building a car which also acts like a boat and an aeroplane as well - it does a bit of everything but nothing really good.

Allright, we had DX which was a wonderful game, but it's rather an exception. A rare one.

Have you actually ever turned the ai in farcry all the way up ? THe ai gets quite good . Doom3 however is just blah. I had a hardtime finding the key cards for the first 12 hours of the game then killing the monsters

On the System Shock 2 comments - I totally agree. It's the only game that's scary inregardless of what setup/environment you have when playing it. It's the only game I pressed the quick save button once every 3 steps I took. It's the only game my friend didn't finish because, yep - he was too scared. I shat my pants while playing the demo in a summer afternoon.

I doubt Doom 3 can do this for me.

I remember my sister and I had the pc room set up. We both had a pc and we both had 5.1 sound system hooked up . Man did we ever get scared out of our minds.

I played it to years after that . Before i did i watched a whole lot of scary movies. Couldn't sleep that night hehe.

Anyway doom3 fall short of system shock 2 .

System shock 2 did every thing doom 3 trys to do.

If doom 3 did it . System shock 2 did it better.

Doesn't make doom3 a bad game. Just doesn't make it a great game.
