But the developers are based in Germany, right? (And AFAIK, Turkey isn't much of an improvement). I have been to Germany on a number of times, and maybe I'm spoilt, being from Sweden and all (currently in the US for a postdoc only).

Anyway, sorry if I'm offending anyone. Just couldn't help myself

Yes, I prefer id's art; and notice that I've talked about the sets and lighting. Doom3 has some very impressive looking interiors, and I've liked some of their characters too (hellknight, lost soul, maggot...). It's no wonder, Adrian Carmack and Kevin Cloud have been doing this stuff for more than a decade, and in game art, the second next important thing to talent is experience...

FEAR shows similar weaknesses to this tech demo; the lighting is bland, there are lots of textures without details, and so on. Compare the screenshot linked in here to any simple bathroom in HL2... It isn't a big surprise, most game artists have yet to learn this craft, especially with the limited number of lights available with fully dynamic lighting.

Speaking of F.E.A.R., I got a mail from GameSpot today telling of a changed pre-release date:

    Old Release Date - 3/1/2005
    New Release Date - 10/17/2005

What kind of soft-shadows? The low quality shadowmaps that are already in FC, HL2 and UT2K4? Or is this some new algorithm?

I'd guess it'd be the low quality shadowmaps.

However...the engine was designed with large landscapes and many characters om the screen at the same time, so the high quality stuff (Unreal Engine 3 etc..) isn't really needed, nor is it the best for what the game is trying to convey.

I'd say art wise (textures, models etc.) this FarCry demo looks mighty impressive. The tech is beyond HL2, but I'd wager it falls somewhat short of D3 tech wise.

However it's all good how we're getting all these superb engines that look great. go Valve, go CryTek and go iD :) [/b]

Ok.. YOU don't like Doom 3's engine. Well I hate to tell it to you, currently, at the moment there is not an engine in a purchaseable game that is superior to Doom 3's tech. I'm sorry if you don't like that, but it's the truth. Notice how the depth of the Doom3 character makes it feel like a friggin Cg movie? FarCry, while looks STUNNING, is not in the same paradigm as Doom3's engine.

Now, I don't want to make this a "oMg CryEngine v.S teh Doom3" thread, so if you would like to discuss this with me, I would be glad to do it over a real time chat service. Just shoot me a PM :)

Regarding FEAR...is it really delayed till then? Damn. I was really looking forward to that, NOLF/NOLF2 kicked ass!

I think he's pointing out that the quality of Doom 3 techdemo would be much better on 2nd generation DX9 hardware than the FarCry techdemo since that Doom 3 techdemo was on a mere GeForce 3.

Just had a look at some of the F.E.A.R. screen shots.
It reminds me a bit of SHOGO
    Anyway..not impressed.
Probably more art direction then anything else

Actually FC with the 1.3 patch has fairly smooth soft shadows on the outdoor levels.
