To be fair, I think the line was particularly noticeable due to the movement speed of the camera/pov. I'd guess that if you were moving at say - walking/running/driving speed, that the LOD change would be less obvious.

I think that if unreal engine 3.0 was used to render the same enviroments youd hardly tell the difference at all

    CrysisVideo Interview Translation

    Hey guys-

We put together a bullet-point translation of the interview over at Gamehelper.com:

    From the article:
There will be a high degree of interactivity with the environment. For example, if you shoot a tree then it falls down and you cant hide behind it anymore [unless a player lies down], if a tree falls across a road a jeep cant drive across it, but a tank can. They (the trees) can fall on someone’s head and kill or injure them. It is a very complete game (world). If a tree lies across the road then the AI knows this and stops the jeep, the ability to destroy the world is not just a side story but is crucial to game play.

Hopefully this might answer some more of your questions! :)

    thanks for the link.

i was a little leary of the 'suit' thing (over complex control type thing)

and the claim of 10 hours of play? (if i remember that correctly)

but i think the environment being so destructable, will allow for much more playtime. in farcry i screwed around probably as much as i focused on missions.

another good thing, im guessing, is when crytek says Q4 this year, they probably actually mean it.

dx10 too! so my new rig i should just get a crossfire mboard and 1 1900. so i can get the dx10 offering at that time.

Your welcome! I hadn't heard anything about the length of play yet - seems all kinds of tidbits are flying up from all over the place about this game. Had to do some digging just to find anything I could verify our facts against.

Yeah, I'm pretty excited myself about the DX10 support - will be interesting to see how this all plays out. The game itself simply looks amazing - with every generation the realism is just taken up a huge notch - curious to see how long the X360 can hang in there against the PS3 and if I hear the PC is dead one more time...;)

Hehe - yeah, well if Ken keeps on his path of assuming consumers will pay double the cost of a fully outfitted X360 just because "They will want to save several paychecks for the PS3 - this is something they will want more than anything before" then you may be right;)

The engine is called CryENGINE, though...

Looking forward to your EA interview.

I was playing far Cry again the other day(same vid card but went to an X2 3800 from XP2500 and it is a lot better!) and was thinking that the common thread is "Cry" does this mean anything different to it's English meaning in their native tongue? Bit of a strange name is all.

I have always thought it might be a acronym of Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli's full name. Maybe he's Cevat R. Yerli? Heh... I might of course be totally wrong with this idea.

Also, there are three Yerli brothers at Crytek; Cevat, Faruk and Avni, but you can't get C-R-Y from those names.

Other one is a much simpler one; Far Cry is the name of the game and it has come from that, but... Crytek was called Crytek way before Far Cry was even planned or CryENGINE announced.

I recall the first time I saw the engine at GDC three years ago (or so - if memory serves.) We were blown away - more by the sheer audacity that an unknown company would "dare" to take on ID or Epic in the battle for game engine supremacy. But it was a slick looking little beauty long before there was a FarCry. I have to say, I wasn't that blown away by the game - it was an interesting look at what could be possible when game systems finally caught up power wise. But it didn't rock my world the way Half-Life did for example.

Crysis however, much like Alan Wake, seems to be bringing us one step closer to experiencing a living breathing world.

Crytek has my faith in them. I was utterly dumb founded by FarCry, talk about a smack up against the forehead out of nowhere. I saw one preview of the game in I believe it was PC Gamer, and they talked pretty bad about it and doubted the games ability to fullfil what was promised, then I remember getting a later of PC Gamer and like a 94% rating of FarCry, and so I bought the game......... impressed to say the least.

Its pretty amazing, IMO, how well the Cryengine has held up. It looks damn good even today compared to the likes of Doom 3, Half-Life 2, and FEAR. If you asked someone to put the games in terms of looks in order and then guess at which one is the oldest, I would bet you that people would almost never guess FarCry was easily older than them all.

One thing I really loved about FarCry was the wild use of color, and the amazing range used. Unlike a lot of games that seem to have such a limited pallete of colors, FarCry went all out and put color everywhere and made it look damn good.

I cant wait for Crysis, I'll be ready to buy it on the first day.

Agreed. It looked very nice for its time, but was otherwise mediocre imo, especially the storyline. Fun to play, but no where near the likes of HL2.

better than any theory I can come up with SlmDnk.

With Farcry - as soon as I get 2 or more of those stupid monkey freaks on the screen the frame rate nose dives yet the human opponents don't have this effect?? I've never finished it so I do actually want to do it - I much prefer the outdoor scenes to the interior. My frame rates are down a lot indoors ... I guess it's the lighting and shadows.

Funny you say that, because I liked playing FarCry a LOT more than playing HL2 which I found mediocre at best.

I actually love FarCry and HL2 but for completely different reasons.

FC offered an extremely varied way of taking on missions, especially outdoor ones. You could come in guns blazing or be careful and sneak around bases and pick off guards one by one. When indoors you could use your cover and try to draw enemies near or come right after them. Against the creatures it was pure adrenaline pumping because they killed you so easily that you really had to buckle down and tear them apart before they got within jumping distance. Very fun game, kept me on my toes.

HL2 really brought me in because of its storyline and the fact that you felt oppressed just like the NPC's around you. I also felt like I was going towards a goal, and one of the key things for me was level design in HL2. It really worked out and you werent in one area for to long (except for the missions involving vehicles).

I cant wait for Crysis, I hope its more of the same that was in FC, but I also hope its very different at the same time. I would enjoy fighting more varied creatures, and I'd also like to see more complex base assaluats. I'm really interested in seeing how they create a more realistic island.

Cant wait, I have some real faith in the people at Crytek.
