So what happened? Were they screwed by their DVI-in chipset supplier? I can't imagine they wanted to ship with this crippling resolution&refresh cap.

If I understand Wavey's posts on this matter, the real issue is all those X8xx cards released starting in April of 2004, many months before ATI decided that they had to respond to NV's SLI initiative. They are the real limitation, and this is supported by all the hints that this problem goes away with R5xx CrossFire. . .

Anybody else think the front page of nvnews is a little on the tacky side? :???: Does being a fan site require schadenfreude of the other folks?

Just think of it as a team-building exercise, geo.

    Only with schadenfreude.

    And a funny comic.

    :D

Hmm. That actually kinda works for me. . .but did they need to do it on the front page? Ah well.

I'd worry about it when that, including the comic, is the entry for "crossfire" in the OED. NvNews is mainly forum based and I am sure they read other forums as well and this is probably just a nudge for all the months of having to listen to "ATI's CrossFire is soooooo much better than SLI" even before it was out. I saw it as a "see, told you so" kind of statement.

Well, "kinda tacky" does not a federal offense make. I just think leadership ought to lead, and I see an important distinction between "our stuff is great" rather than "your stuff sucks" when engaged in by leaders, with troops, and how that flows thru the community.

    But whatever.

Not to mention the pounding they took during the dark FX period, they're excited their "team" got a win....let 'em have their fun.

So we're hoping that Crossfire's limitations are down to R4x0, and that they will go away with R5x0? Then why give Crossfire a bad rep by launching it with problems from the generation of graphics cards that are just about to be superceded? It makes no sense to show Crossfire in a bad light when it can be shown in a good light with R5x0.

It's this sort of thing that makes me dispair of ATI's marketing.

Perhaps at this point. They assumed they had better launch it despite its flaws otherwise be accused of more paper launching.. Then again? Has anyone found Master cards for sale yet?

Simple way to check if its a driver issue is whether your seeing an increase in normal HL2 or not. The exe name for lost coast is still the same as HL2 so when it launches CF doesnt see it as any different to when you launch HL2 and therefore applies the same rendering technique. (and you therefore get similar gains)

Would be a v bad driver though if they hadnt included HL2 as an enabled title.
