The kind of analysis you describe, while useless for comparing 3D-cards, seems damn useful for gamers trying to get a grip on what parameters they have to play with, and how they affect DOOM3 gameplay performance. Hope you've had the time to do a thorough job/pump the guys at id regarding what settings are most critical in what situation.

    Kudos.
    Sounds like a must read.
Please try to facilitate system to system comparisons - makes the question of upgrading a whole lot easier if you can figure your likely improvement in straight percentages, rather than making guesses from framerate graphs made with different settings.

Hush you! The man is being nice!

    ;)

BTW-Kyle-Will you be talking to the Carmack soon and could you ask him if this game comes with a warning for cardiac patients? I've been having some problems and I'm trying to figure out if my wife could sue Id if I have a heart attack playing Doom3....

I'm most interested in the difference (quality and speed) between the low/medium/high/??? settings. Also does it change the experience switching to low or medium, like will there be lights missing and make it less scary/atmospheric and stuff like that. I hope you made screenshots 8)

You know, I'm hoping id Software is considering licensing just their sound engine out and not keep attached to the Doom 3 engine. I've been looking forward to games finally having real 3d Sound once again.

Heh and mind if I ask what you have planned for QuakeCon this year?
(just realized I'm going to be in the DFW area while QuakeCon is happening this year so figure I should stop by)

I'd like to see minimum and average FPS in these results and more written details (like if it's free run or bot play).

The format will be a bit different this year, but it should be worth you making the trip over.

    Hello,

What I would like to see is various screenshots detailing the quality differences between the setups, i.e.:

Screenshot on GF Ti4800 at best playable settings
Screenshot on Radeon 9700Pro at best playable settings

so on and so forth, to see what we are missing by staying with x card as opposed to upgrading. Focus on all the latest and greatest technological advances from the d3 engine.

Too bad there aren't 512MB videocards yet on the market to enable the "Ultra Quality" !!!!

    Thanks,

    François

I'm sure these were long hours, but hanging out with the id guys, messing around with D3, that's a tough life....

This is incredibly cool. Spending time at one of the most influential game developpers in the world, just after the game has been released, building a guide with advice for the gamers of this world on how they will be able to play Doom3 on their machines.

Someone may have to refresh my memory, but in the hardware review business I don't think there has ever been a bigger "scoop" than this.

Hope your servers will be able to handle the massive loads

    Good JOB!

I'd like to see some benchmarks using old rigs, like a 1500+ with a mx440 or a 2400+ with a 8500/9000pro/ti4200/ti500. Something like that. Just to see the scalability (does this word exists? ) of the doom 3 engine.
