How about a thread in which people can ask for recommendations on a good game to play? I'll go first.

I want something with guns, in 3D. Isomeric is ok if it's a great game.
I want to buy and upgrade my hardware and/or myself or my team.
Space ships or other vehicles are fine, but simply running around is fine as well.
Strategy and stealth, combined with trading are much preferred to kill all.
The freedom to look around and come up with a plan. Open gameplay.
    Immersion and a good story.
Old is fine, as long as the looks work.
I want lots of interaction with the environment and people around.
Single player is a must, multiplayer a bonus.
The "just a bit more" factor.

Can anyone recommend me something like that?

Sounds like you're looking for Deus Ex, sans vehicles though.

Independence war (2): definitely, when I come across a copy. And I do still have an unplayed copy of freelancer laying somewhere. Good idea.

I played Deus Ex many times. And while I enjoyed Thief, I heard lots of bad things about part three. But I should check my (rather large) stack of cheaply bought and still unplayed games to see if I don't have a copy already.

You heard wrong. Deadly Shadows is a good and entertaining game in almost every way and, as opposed to it's contemporary Ion Storm compatriot Deus Ex: Invisible War, doesn't let it's heritage down. The only notable letdown is a touch of consolitis. Symptoms include load-zones and low-res textures, though the latter is fixable with fan made mods from around the net.

Edit: To be fair, it could be easy to get the wrong impression of Thief 3 as it has several smaller nags. I remember reviews that scored the game highly, yet seemed to spend most of their allotted space criticizing it's flaws. However, these nags are just that: Nags. The person who lets these stop them from enjoying the excellent story, atmosphere, and core mission gameplay must be a very grumpy and impatient person indeed.

Isn't Thief 3 all stealth though and no killing fun?

The core gameplay is stealth based, but if you want to kill, feel free to do so. As opposed to it's predecessors the higher difficulty levers in Thief 3 doesn't impose kill-restrictions (except for non-combatants), but rather makes you more vulnerable and the enemies more aware of their surroundings. However, Garret isn't exactly a stellar swordsman (and ammo is limited), so going the violent route on the higher difficulties (frankly, playing Garret: homicidal maniac rather than Garret: master thief on the lower settings isn't much fun) will still require some stealth and ingenuity (backstabs, headshots from the dark, fiery oil traps and so on). Play it your way, so to speak.

    Oblivion maybe?

"Single player a must" rules out a lot of great MMO's that would otherwise fully qualify your criteria.

If you hadn't mentioned 3D, I almost could swear you were describing Fallout.

Also, I haven't got too far into it and so far the inventory aspect seems pretty small so far, but I'd say Dark Messiah fits that mold as well.

KOTOR2 would be a close fit to your requirements.

Agreed. Although I also agree to a close call for Fallout, or Deus Ex.

Between trying Anachronox, replaying JA2 or PS:T again or looking what new things the devs/mods (same thing) came up with for Vegastrike: Privateer Remake (a gorgeous fan remake of Privateer with the (also fanmade) Vegastrike engine), the latter has won out for now.

But that won't last, of course. ;)

Seconded another great game and one of my all time favs. Every now and then I'll reinstall this beauty. Man, I really loved the design workshop, it really was a fresh addition to the Civ-genre.

Last month I played through Fallout Tactics again. I still love it.

If you like that genre (Fallout, JA) you might want to check out Silent Storm if you haven't yet. It's an very under rated game. It has it's flaws, but for what it does right it's totally worth it.

    http://www.nival.com/silentstorm/

Think Fallout but with a fully 3D environment. It's also sports nearly fully destructable environments. If there is a door that is locked and you need to get though just blow away the lock with your SMG. In most other games even if you are walking around with a freaking rocket launcher a little wooden door will stop you in your tracks. (DeusEx is one of those rare games that got this right too.) Or if there is no door, just attach explosives to the wall and blow a hole in it. Once I got cornered during a fire fight into a room. And I just blew a hole in the floor and escaped.
