    call it bad week.
i know that engine is important and i certainly dont think that those who discuss game engines arent gamers.... its just that this year we got some titles that were great dissappointments even with breathtaking graphics... its like there is common trend of trying to justify their lack of ideas and other improvments in gameplay part with fancy graphics....

UE3 is coming soon, it will be great engine, i am also one drooling about it when i see the screenies, but if some dev team screws gameplay just cause they rely too much on "TEH BEST" engine currentlly on market .... thats where i was acctaully going ....

we all play games for fun .... if CoD 2 can deliver that fun factor for me, i am not _that_ interested in engine...specially since these are first shots anyway and they do look good ....

i dont hope for sequel, i hope they will make COD2 as immersive as they did with first 2 titles.

greatest graphics in the world cant make up for lousy/boring gameplay.
but good gameplay can make up for "not the best engine used" graphics...
for me D3 and COD:UO are perfect example....
i started using god mode in Doom3 somewhere around middle of the game cause it became too repetative and boring....but i wanted to see graphics
OTOH.... i never, for a second thought about doing the same in my playing of COD:UO (which i play in single 3 times).....

soooooo....i just hope that they will concentrate on better gameplay rather then ONLY on better graphics......

there you go.....morning coffee and nice long sleep helps people make nicer posts

Funny, for me it was the opposite. While I didn't actually use cheats in CoD, I did use lots of custom saves when I always play games with only auto-saves, especially in that trainstation UD level in the Russian campaign. I remember thinking that I just didn't want to go through all that "stuff" again if I died.

With D3 (which I've completed four times already) I've only used auto-saves because even if I died I liked the game so much that it wouldn't bother me having to play the same area more than once.

I think all game developers want to improve the gameplay in sequels but, like everything else, it's a subjective process. And there's always the fear of going too far and alienate fans of the original. I certainly wouldn't have enjoyed D3 as much if it involved driving vehicles in an alien jungle planet. ;)

Large amount of fresh coffe is the only thing that can make this world a better place.
I'd certainly have enjoyed D3 more if it wasn't a simple "update" of the 1996 formula "shoot monsters that appears behind you, or behind a closed door; and find the blue/red/yellow key to open the next door".

for first few levels...then it was same stuff all over again... you bloody knew that behind next door there is monster and that when you see 3 charging at you from front somehow 2 more will appear behind....

thats what killed D3 for me.... specially if you died, you bloody well knew where the trigger was, how many there are and where they are.... they could at least program little randomiser into all that..... fuck, if they can make such engine small sub program that would at least randomize order in which monsters appear shouldnt be THAT hard

actually amazing graphics can go along way to make an otherwise boring game very enjoyable.

while i dont think doom 3 is a great game, and it got boring half way through, it was fun for the first 8 ro so hours. cna u honestly say that basic ass gameplay of just walking slowly and shooting would be ANY fun if the graphics werent so great?

Humm, everybody`s got Doom3 by the balls for being overly scripted, predictable, boring and very very narrow as a gameplay experience-and everybody`s mostly right. What I don`t understand is how the above is true and HL2 is the best game evah? It`s exactly the same thing-just as scripted, boring, narrow, tunnel-oriented game. The triggers are just as evident, and absolutely nothing is random there.Heck, there are even invisible walls to make sure that you stay on the "right track" :?

Not "everybody", I, for myself, was also dissapointed by the core gameplay mechanics of HL².
But, at least, HL² was more diverse in its scenery and in its situation, it also had some cool gimmicks (The physic gun, the vehicules...).

Doom 3 décor was set 90% of the time in the alpha labs 1, 2, 3, etc...
And the gameplay was a simple reharsh of the "I see, I shoot". Without being as fun as Serious Sam, or Painkiller.
Hardly what I'd call , like PC Gamer, "a masterpiece of the art form".

i agree, HL2 was also pretty overhyped, but it offered at least some twists.... just like COD or COD:UO, which are also heavily scriptted and you have one path, but you never know whats next....

like that mission in COD:UO where u fly in british bomber and when u finally think you did your job, you get shot down and you join resistance, then they reasign you to commando unit and you go to Sicily....

thats why i liked COD so much....and HL2 (not that much)..... D3 simply had room after room, all bloody same....and after couple hours you knew nuff how they scriptted so you bloody well could predict where are triggers (well, maybe not all, but most of them)....there were no twists no surprises (unless you call spawning enemies behind your back 1000 times a surprise).....

thats why i cant wait for COD2...and if it has engine as good as D3....even better :D

hl2 was more boring than doom 3. at least doom 3 had graphics and effects to wow you. hl2 was just flat and boring.

Oh bother. Let's all admit being bitter and jaded every now and then and be done with it, shall we?

When it comes to First Person Shooters? Well, maybe we should consider ourselves jaded every now and then...
Or we should start thinking that maybe the genre is overcrowded, for its own good, and therefore nothing does surprise, positively, anymore.

That sounds about right. The gameplay videos released for Pariah, for example, are entirely unimpressive. It looks like just another shooter without anything to distinguish itself from the pack. It may be that the videos were a poor example of the gameplay available, but so far it's not making me particularily excited.

I'm not too bitter, but I'm definitely jaded! :p

Regardless, CoDII looks pretty nice so far. I can only hope it doesn't turn out to be like MoH Pacific Assualt.

Well, you know people people like sometime to give "hyped game #15763" a chance.
And when they play it and discover that the game is simply "random FPS #14852", they sometime start to regret the €50 spent. :p
