Busted NVIDIA AA with drivers newer than ~169.13

Has anyone else noticed that one can't get AA (forced or otherwise) on quite a few games with NV drivers lately? I had to go back to 169.13 to get AA + HDR to work in Oblivion, and the same with STALKER. I'm running an 8800GTX, both XP and Vista 64-bit. It affects my 8600GT and 7800 Go as well.

Found this thread on NV's official forum. There was a similar thread on the official Oblivion forum a month ago or so.

How do you enable the AA + HDR with the drivers? Go to the Nvidia control panel right? And then in the global settings?

there is not any card can do MSAA in STALKER when using full dynamic lighting.

all the g8x/g9x can do MSAA in Oblivion when you choice override AA mode in the control panel of driver and set HDR + no AA in the game.

I'm running the 174.16's on Vista 64 and AA works again in the game profiles. Many versions, the game profile AA settings were broken and had to be set in Global Settings.
Made it a pain to switch between games that allowed in-game AA vs. those not requiring "Override any app setting".

Actually I do get AA in STALKER max quality with 169.13. Forced with nHancer (NV CP probably works too). The performance drop is horrid and unplayable, but it's definitely multisample AA and very pretty.

This is running at about 9fps, which is about 1/5 as fast as it is without forced AA (4x MSAA). I have a mod installed called "S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Weather Overhauled" btw (actually runs faster than stock while looking way better). 2x MSAA is playable.

oh , the AA indeed works now.

in 1024x768 , the fps drop to 35 fps from 85 fps, and drop to 7 fps from 51 fps in 1600x1200.

8800GT 512MB C600|S1625|M1800, FW 169.28 for Vista x64, STALKER 1.0004.

How?
I have only heard of talk that deferred rendering doesn't work with AA.
Is this a somewhat recent development?

AFAIK, it is a "driver hack" that uses knowledge about Stalker's F-Buffer format to perform hardware MSAA. It is not exposed via an API.

Actually, with my 6200, NVIDIA has deactivated AA anywhere, without HDR also (since that card can't do it).
And I remember, when I had the 5800 Ultra, that I was able to force 16x AA from the control panel, but after a few releases, the highest setting became 8xQ.
NVIDIA is a cheater company: they force restrictions in their drivers.
I don't think AMD does the same.

FEAR and Supreme Commander AA work here on 174.20 beta and 169.21 official. I'll check Source engine games here in a moment...

No. ATi even added some AA features. MSAA 6x is still available on R9700 and TAA and AAA options were added within further driver releases.

STALKER never had any form of AA work.

I dont have problems in STALKER with the AA and DX9 XP 32, . Only less perfomance with the later driver for the 9600 gt . In other some games , yes , like COD 4 - artifacts, with the drivers for the 9600 gt . But this is fixed with the later Forceware 174.2. But still I dont play STALKER with this last driver .

In STALKER , the less of perfomance was 30 % with AA 2 x and 60 % with AA 4x , with one 8800 gtx . With AA 2x the less is equal at 1080p . The memory usage is 700 MB with 2X at 1080p , this is important ;)

Sorry for the late update - Source games AA worked for me in both 169.21 and 174.20 (as well as the aforementioned titles).

Ok. Interesting. Well, maybe this is something that's broken on some cards but not others. I have at hand a 8600, 8800GTX, and 7800Go. These are games I've lost AA in with drivers newer than 169.13.

I haven't been playing many modern games lately (DOSBOX fever!) but it seems that the problem is with forced AA.

-Oblivion HDR+AA
-STALKER
-AVP2 (yup!)
-Guild Wars (only in-game AA options and forced TAA work)
