Didn't Final Fantasy come out before Phantasy Star, at least in Japan?

No i believe the first phantsy start came out 3 months before ff1 .

Then of course we have the best rpg of the 32bit era . Panzer dragoon saga . Blew away ff7 and 8 .

Well then both games are copying off Dragon Warrior, so there.

And I'm sure if Panzer Dragoon Saga had a larger release, it wouldn't have quite the legendary status it does. So Panzer Dragoon Saga is better than FF7, Pokemon(hey it came out around that time), Xenogears, and Fallout?(pcs are 32 bit too, and it came out around that time period)

You know I wasn't a fan of fall out . Now fall out two is really good. But i'm sure you know what I meant when i said the 32 bit era .

Dragon warrior copied ultima though ....

Anyway pds was a great game . I can argue that ff 7 and up wouldn't have even made an impression if it wasn't for the massive amount of hype that sony threw its way . With that we come to an impass . If you have played both of the games (well there ware 4 in question here) you would clearly see which is the best.

Well, I've never played PDS, so I have no idea how good it is, but things available in limited quantities are usually remembered better then they were. The group that made PDS, did they make any other RPGs?

BTW, Final Fantasy 7 was the last Final Fantasy I liked. I wouldn't say it's the best console rpg ever, but I'd say it is in the top 10 for me. Not that I could actually name 10 console RPGs I liked, usually I either really like an RPG or throw it down in disgust.

The game was made with enough units that about 1/3 of the saturn user base would be able to get it .

You know I was watching the comercial for x2 (the new ff) and I did not see in game shots shown once in that whole comercial just fmv. Come to think of it since ff7 I don't remember seeing any actual game play in any of the ff adds .

PDS may have had enough copies for 1/3 of the Saturn user base, but 99% of those copies must be in Japanese as only 10,000 were released in the US.(which was at least 1/100th of the Saturn user base in the US)

And Final Fantasy games are often as cinematic in game as they are in the FMVs, though it's been a while since they've come with actual games.

There was 2 releases . The first one was 10k , the second one was 50k copys . There were 60k over all . The game your thinking of with only 10k copys is shinning force 3 part 1 .

One of the wonderful things about PC games is the ability to mod them and use mods. Just take BG2, there are loads of mods. I worked with the Lead Designer of the game, Dave Gaider (and a few other people from the group IEEAIS) to rewrite the end battle of Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal (a mod called Ascension). You can download new NPC's, flirt packs for existing ones, new items, modified monsters, unofficial bug fix packs...

This is one reason why I will always prefer PC games.

Phantasy Star i never really got into....i just found it boring for some reason. But if you want a great rpg/strat game get shinig star(i think star), on the genesis. Great game. Other than that you should try gladius for the consoles(don't know about pc), its sorta like a ff tactics game. Another great games was ogre battle.

And sure ff games have not been as great as they used to be, but the best rpgs nowadays are games that have immense character interaction with each other and the world. Everybody had a sotry and everyone has an ajenda. That is why kotor ruled, ps torment ruled, chrono trigger ruled, and why ff series ruled.

I am bored with generic characters that are no different from each other in any game. The only difference is the mechanics. I mean what difference is there if you take a character from nwn and put him in wizardry or might and magic or temple of elemental evil? It doesnt matter. I like games where the main character and the characters that surround him have identities and are not cardboard cutouts. Most pc rpg(IMO) are like that. Im not saying that they don't exist for the consoles, but there seems to be more character development in console rpg's than in pc rpg's.

Again that is not to say that there aren't many charcater driven rpg's on pc. Unless they are big names, you never hear of them on pc, whereas a crappy game on a console will get pushed more unfortunately.

And square is a lot more than cinematics. I havent played any ps2 ff's since i dont have one, but they make a lot of games other than the ff series. Secret of mana was an awesome game, crono trigger, front mission, ff tactics, xenogears, vagrant story, parasite eve, bahamut lagoon. They in my mind are the most successfull rpg maker ever. Thier name in the console market defines rpg's. That is the reason why i say squareenix is the best in that regard. Not many game companies can boast the amount of hits that square has put out. Unfortunately they are the EA of rpg's, because no one really challenges thier position, or has the name recognition.
