I'm not sure about the Xpox, but the Xbox360 version does not have the DX10 water ripples. According to IGN Head-to-head, it doesn't even have the sprite that the DX9 version has to mark water interaction. The water just stands still when the player moves through the water.

Yes sorry, I meant the Xpox360

That's pretty sad to see that console users don't even get that basic level of water interaction at all. I'd be curious to see a fully-fledged PC Dx9 vs Xpox360 comparison... Just to see how far the differences extend.

Pro-tip: intentionally misspelling the name of the product to be an insult just makes you seem like an infantile little douche.

Geez, you can calm down now. I hate the Failbox360, that's all there is to it.

If you can't post in a mature manner, you shouldn't post at all. B3D isn't the forum for 12yr olds to act cool.

You could look at 360's inability to do the fancy water as a sign of how DX9-ish the GPU really is. Maybe. Sorta.

pretty sure the Xbox GPU coudl do it, after all NWN 1 in DX8 had ripples as you walked through water.

How is the 360 failbox? It's very successful in sales and attachment rates. Why would you hate a piece of machinery.

Except that Halo 3 has fancy water...

But when talking about 3D water there is a huge difference if the water has a simple algorithm for the ripples or if it is truly physics driven to be as realistic as possible.

I tell you right away that you are completly correct and then we are not talking about a Crysis DX9 in its full glory!

i would say it is more about perfomance. Bisohock is doing other stuff besides rendering water. It is the sum of it all that dictates what gets cut out and what stay.

    What do you call this?
Perhaps I am misunderstanding "advanced", but Halo 3's water surfaces are dynamically deformable. If that's not advanced, then I'll bow out of the thread... :|

Here's a gif (link so that the forum doesn't bog down) where you can get a glimpse of the water deforming as the vehicle gets in there and out. The gametrailers review video of the game has a couple moments where you can see the water deforming according to character movement and weapons fire...

on a side note, I wonder if they're using the hardware tessellator for this...

Oh but the water in Halo 3 is advanced. But I was mainly talking about the differences of using true advanced physics for calculating ripples as in true life.
As opposed to a simple algorithm which does not produce realistic ripples but still looks 'cool'.
It may be so that the Halo 3 water has physics calculations for the ripples, if so then I am very impressed.

But maybe I am wrong in assuming that the DX10 Bioshock mode has physics for the water ripples. As I dont have a DX10 card I dont have that luxory but I thought I saw some stuff about it in the settings files.

Ah I see, thanks for clarifying. :) I'm hoping the documentary (from where the pic was grabbed) actually explains a bit more than just "geometry mesh for water". I'll have to wait until my copy arrives.
