    too tired to open it and install it, probably too drunk to be safe as well. Been at the races today and didn't lose my shirt so that's OK. It'll be tomorrow night before I fully test. However, first impression;

    Goddamn it's big!

It looks even bigger when ya pull it out and put it next to an X800!

    (I did that this afternoon)

    That's what *she* said.

That's what *sh... wait, no. She didn't say that.

Where did you buy it and how much moolah, just out of interest?

Bestbargainpc.com, $469us for an X800 Pro VIVO that they got to me in 40 hours....but it wasn't the right card. They just RMAed out the replacement yesterday and it IS the right card. :D

The 6800 GT is a Gainward golden sample, and it's just a loaner for a review. I only have it for a few more days.

Actually, I think the Gainward GT is actually just as tall as two X800s stacked on top of each other now that I think about it....and I actually still have two X800s here to do that with and take a picture of. ;)

I thought it was a single slot though right?

Anyway I will my card had a better heat sink, it gets too hot in my case unless I use ati tool.

The Gainward ain't, or if it is there is about a bazillion of an inch clearance 'tween it and the first PCI slot.

The simple 6800 is single slot too, for the record; PCB is the same AFAIK.

Radeons are usually smaller than the Audigy2, while NV40´s bigger than it (if the A2 relation helps to make the comparison)...

It was funny, my son's friend's mother was over when I was pulling my old X800 and showed her how the 6800 & X800 matched up and she just said, "Why would they do that? Why make it so huge and such?"; which cracked me up for some reason.

I actually really like the Gainward cooling solution, it's not too loud and very effective. I always thought that red box thingy enclosed the card to force the air to circulate, it turns out it's more of a platform to hold fans with open sides.

Cheers. Hmm... tempting (although so is an X800XT PE for £319). For a build, not for me though. :(

    I'd HATE that!

I still have yet to have someone ask me to build 'em a PC that is better than my rig, but I'm pretty sure I'd hate it. :?

yeah I've seen that deal, but I don't see £55 of value in a PE over a GT and I wanted to try nVidia this time for other reasons (better LCD support, screen sizing options not the least amongst them)

all installed, nice pcb, blue led's on fans etc. all wasted as I'm not into case windows etc :)

Needed to move cables around and unplug a HDD to get it in, it only just fits.

Not too noisy, not too hot, in fact my case and cpu temps are cooler than with my 9700Pro and artic silencer! Maybe becasue its not overclocked.

Quick run through of Neverwinter, Doom3, Battlefield 1942, Gothic II, City of Heroes showed its much faster obviously.

    61.77 drivers.

    3dmark03 10800,

    aquamark
    FX score: 8481
    CPU score: 7690
    AquaMark score: 54675

    On a Barton @2.2ghz (PR3200) and NF7-S with 1gig RAM.

    Other Pluses

LCD options do want I want them to, e.g. Ground Control max res is 1024x768 and dont want it stretched to fit and blurry on my 1280x1024 LCD, this wasn't possible with the 9700Pro but I can play it centred/sharp with black borders on the 6800GT.

AA- 4xAA can't really notice a difference over the 9700Pro so that's OK.

    CoH No more texture flashing.

    minuses

texture shimmering - Bf1942 Desert maps were always my test maps, and so far (without changing LOD, just Tri and AF opts) it's horrible on that game.

Hate me, but that system is underpowered. Any chance you could sneak in from the missus something like a 3000+XP (if you can still find one that is).....

Disable optimisations and increase LOD to a value where shimmering gets eliminated and textures not too blurry. I'd also say increase resolution even more, but...uh oh....

well it is currently clocked at XP3200 speeds, it does run at 3400+ speeds but summer heat precluded that for a while.

Haven't had time to play with LOD yet - but it is far worse than when I had a 15" 1024x768 LCD monitor with 9700Pro perfoemance AF.

3200+ speed is enough then. Especially since you'll run the majority of games in 1280 with some AA/AF enabled.

As for the last line: remember what I told you eons ago?

yeah but its really bad the following games/apps all have terrible texture shimmering and sparkling so far, not totally cured by turning of AF and Tri Opts.

    B1942 and mods,
    Tribes Vengance Beta
    WH40K:Dow
    CS Source and stress test.

Yes I'm going to have to play with Rivatuner quite a bit..

How can nVidia owners crow that Radeons don't get true Trilinear if this is what they think true tri is?

Unless I've messed something up terribly..

It does appear to be a D3D thing though, D3, CoH and NWN all behave fine.

LOD +1.0 makes Bf1942 bearable. I'll have another look at CoH.
