As asstastic as the game is now, I was REALLY engrossed by Ultima I on the apple II. Then UltimaII, then III, then IV...the rest were a bit 'meh', especially since there was the 'lose your keys "feature"' in Ultima 7 that would remove any keys from your inventory when you slept that kept you from being able to finish the game.

Outside of that, I liked half life (though Xen sucked), particularly the head crabs. HL-2 was pretty intense, also.

Please do, I've been meaning to grab the open source packs but never quite found the time to collate it all and install everything.

A few memorable gaming moments :
    - getting out of the ship in Unreal 1 and discovering the planet
    - slapping chickens in Dungeon Keeper
    - still in Dungeon Keeper, the speeches in between levels, especially the one about the folks worshipping the common rabbit
    - Giants : Citizen Kabuto. "Timmy !"
    - Day of the Tentacle : "Hi Laverne ! How did you get upstairs ?" "Am I upstairs ? I got lost...".
    - FF7, Aeris dying
    - Wing Commander IV, when the second capital ship arrives just in time to save you
    - Serious Sam : "Bwwwaaaaaaaahhhhhhh yourself !" (after the scene with all the kamikaze monsters)
    - The visor in Metroid Prime
    - And how could I forget, playing with 9 or 10 Luck in Fallout

There's so many I refuse to pick a single one.

FFVII: Aeris' death will always be memorable.
Resident Evil: Dogs through the window, boy did I jump
Resident Evil 2: The police station "one way mirror", which had the monster jump through it. It was even better when you played the second disc, were in that room and the monster didn't jump through.
    Tomb Raider: TRex
Privateer: Having the green egg-thing follow you, knowing you can't fight it for the first time and feeling some genuine unease
    Giants: "Mah balls are saggy"
And most tragically... the first time I walked into Ironforge in WoW and saw the true scale of things, with hundreds of people walking around doing their own thing.

I'm amazed you didn't mention the dungeon mistress and the torture chamber... :)

On the subject of the speeches, I seem to recall from an interview, that they were done by one of the programmers. Apparently they were going to have a "professional" do the voice over but it turned out to be inferior. Just shows you how evil you can become by programming the PC.

I loved the original Ultima and all the games leading up to it, I still remember leaving a quarter jammed on my "F" key overnight to build up experience...

Counter-Strike - Being the last to T's on a De_cobble, at bomb site and if we planted the bomb normally the entire CT team would pwn us and then defuse it. Then I had a stroke of genius, I yelled at my friend on the phone to leap on my head, he goes "huuuh!", then I told him to jump in place and I stoood up, then he croutch jumped on top of the crate and planted the bomb. This notifies the CT team and as we make our way our we get wasted.

But then the 8 CT's scour the site looking for the bomb, only to hear the beeping get quicker. Just when they realize the couldn't find it, they all make a run for it but then KABOOOM! All 8 are dead and the T's score the first victory in I have no idea how many rounds. We repeated this all over, Aztec, Dust, and more. That was great until a new release prevented us from getting on top. Bastards! I felt like we were the only persons in the whole world that did that because we never heard about anyone else doing it or seen others do it ourselves. This made having cable internet a gem because it freed up the phone line to use as commo until reliable VOIP came out.

Desert Combat (early versions) - I always have these strokes of genius in games and in the map DC_Village, I wanted to turn the Black Hawk into a mini AC-130 gunship which kicked ass in the maps that had it. I became an engineer and went about my business to place a mortar inside the helicopter and tried to use it. First time I place it and mounted on it I died in a firery explosion. I was, "WTF!" I did it a few more times and I still died. I started to get pissed and I asked my friend to watch and see if another player was being a smacktard and TKing me. I attempted once more and still died and heard my friend cracking up on the phone. I then blamed my friend for TKing me but he said it wasn't him. So I decided to catch him red handed so I plant the mortar and instead of mounting I would back up.

I suddenly realize why my efforts have been failing. There was a bug! The mortar really wants to fall to the ground and it'd damage anything in it's way. So the Black Hawk would be forced towards the ground and take damage then explode! Which is when I had another stroke of genius. I used this to great effect until they patched it. I was the only person in the world who knew this. And out of rage for me killing myself and being "no more" over ten times I proceeded to apply this new knowledge to the next game. When people would pile into the helipcopter at the start of the match, I would jump in the back. When the helicopter took flight I place the mortar killing everyone without me being responsible! The humor came when everyone blamed the pilot for being incompetent. I repeated a few more times and it really demoralized the pilot so he left. The last time I did it someone typed in the chat, "Hey, this guy is doing something funny back here!"

So if anyone ever got affected by that I apologize but it was hilarious while it lasted and to do it to smacktard pilots who go solo in a Black Hawk as a form of punishment.

I finished the game twice but never chose more than 6 for Luck. Without giving too many spoilers can you give us an idea of what the game experience is when having 9 or 10 for Luck?

    Let's see:

    - Ultima Underworld 1 & 2: too many great moments to list. QBert anyone? :)

    - Wing Commander 2: when the Japanese girl joins you on your mission and kamikaze into the huge Kilrathi enemy ship where her husband is held.

    - Dune (the original one): discovering the world, the great music (Adlib - sic), the strategic fights towards the end of the game, Shani, etc. Finished the game in 13hrs in a non-stop gaming session.

    - Wolfenstein 3D: when I realised that moving the mouse was updating the 3D player view in real-time.

    - Doom: the boss of the second episode and the sounds of his steps.

    - Quake 4: not sure this qualifies as a "great" gaming moment but certainly a shocking one. I was close to become traumatized for life watching what happens after you get captured...

    - System Shock 2: realising that the girl that's been guiding you at the beginning of the game had been dead for a while.

    - Civilization: realizing it's 6am on your watch and you're still playing.

    - Ultima V: winning the game.

    - Wolfenstein Enemy Territory: fragging 4+ more people with a Panzerfaust, or knifing an unsuspecting sniper from behind :)

    - Half-Life: getting shot through the ducts (try Call of Duty 2 for a new taste of this), thinking I was safe behind a crate just before a grenade landed at my feet...

heh... nothing like hiding in the bushes and calling artillery with XP maxed on the tank just as it comes near barricade .... i loved that part..... with doubled artillery there was no way they could repair tank  we would even let them come to the tank cause artillery would massacre them all... hi hi hi...... or when they advance putting mines between their spawn and place where the fight is going on.... thats just hillarious....

W:ET was so much fun

*****Metal Gear Solid 3: MEGA HUGE ENDING Spoilers Below********

When Snake defeats Boss at the end of the game and shes laying on the ground. Your standing over her and the game goes back into gameplay. Your wondering what your supposed to do. You try to move and you can't, you then realize that Snake is pointing his gun at Boss. Basically Kojima put the final shot to Boss in the user hands. You fire the gun (which was her gun, called "The Patriot") and everything fades to black.

You then get a wrap up to the storyline through cinematics. One of the scenes is Snake (Now Big Boss) visiting her grave (Boss). As hes visiting her grave you can hear narration from another character named Eva in the background explaining what Boss did and what she will be remembered as, this is what she said....

(Big Boss is walking through a cemetery with s suitcase)

Eva: The taint of disgrace will follow her to her grave. Future generations
will revile her. In America, as a despicable traitor with no sense of honor.
And in Russia, as a monster who unleashed a nuclear catastrophe. She will go
down in official history as a war criminal. And no one will ever understand
her. That... was her final mission. And like a true soldier, she saw it
    through the end.

(Big Boss arrives at The Boss' grave)

Eva: But I think she wanted you of all people to know the truth. She wanted to
live on in your memory. Not as a soldier, but as a woman. But she was
forbidden to tell you herself. And that's why she told me.

(Big Boss places the Patriot and some flowers on the grave)

Eva: Snake, history will never know what she did. No one will ever learn the
truth. Her story... her debriefing... will endure only in your heart.
Everything she did, she did for her country. She sacrificed her life and her
honor for her native land. She was a real hero.

(The Boss' tombstone reads: "In Memory of a Patriot who Saved the World")

Eva: She was a true patriot.

    (Big Boss salutes)

******DO NOT LOOK UP FROM THIS POINT********

Best ever gaming moment? Has to be the two days solid I spent in front of my TV playing Yoshi's Island on the SNES. Best gaming I can ever recall.

Quake deathmatch on Voodoo hardware, Chrono Trigger on the SNES and Super Street Figher II on the SNES all come close. Gaming has become steadily worse for me since the old SNES days and Q1 on the PC. Never had the same spark, still waiting for something to come along and completely overwhelm me.

Oblivion is my biggest hope right now, trying not to get too excited ABOUT IT I NEED A 360 RIGHT NOW OH MY GOD.

Ocarina of time, the entire game. I'v played many very good games that kept me glued to them, but Ocarina of time totally sucked my life away.

Only other contender would be the first demo level in Quake. That game gave me my first and only true scare; i remember jumping. All the new games, save the silent hill series, dont really do that for me anymore.

    Just remember another moment.

Fallout 1: When you meet The Master

You know something is horroubly wrong when you reach the third level of the vault. As you move toward the general direction of the control room, you see the walls, doors, computer becomes more odd. Then after walking through that long corrador, The Master's conversation padle pops up. The sight of him is just unforgetable.

I finished playing Mafia yesterday. It's massive if you play all the sub missions as well. The whole game is great; storytelling, scenarios/mapping, voice acting, the lot. A classic, with quality production throughout.
