I seem to recall it lasting literally hours, too. Or is that just my addled memory?

RtCW? The guy with the sword? Flamethrower, followed by panzerfausts or Viper, and you win... thought it was one of the easiest last boss fights ever myself.

Yup, the first playthrough made me incredibly frustrated, almost giving up on the game entirely. Reading up on some walkthroughs/guide then made it incredibly interesting, cerebral even.

Quoted for truth. Have you ever beaten him without resorting to violence?

Contra III really did have some very cool and hard bosses, Super Ghosts & Ghouls was plain harder though, especially with the pixel perfect jumping requirement. /me gets misty-eyed

Oh, man, it's been way too long since I've played this game. I've beaten it nearly every possible way. My favorites, though:
    1. Without fighting (just a damned cool ending).
    2. Learn true name as a mage, and rape him with exceedingly-powerful magic.
    3. Go as a warrior with super high con and just stand in his face, laughing, as you pummel him, and he can't do enough damage to actually hurt you.

Anyway, I also had a lot of fun taking out the final boss in the Throne of Bhaal expansion for BG2.

I thought the boss of American McGee's Alice was pretty hard.

Damn, you and John Reynolds are giving me the Torment bug again. :D

I've been waiting for someone to do an emulator/hack for it, ala Exult for U7 or the Fallout hack that allows 1024 res, etc. but I guess not enough people have played this masterpiece of RPG goodness.

    /me reaches for the CDs

as a rule, i hate boss battles!

DOOM3's bosses were cool though, and the final boss was too

    ***!!!DOOM3 Resurrection of Evil SPOILERS!!!***

Resurrection of Evil's bosses were cooler but i hated the final boss and i had to cheat
reason: having to run around, looking up at the sky for a boss you can hardly see against the background, whilst being hit on all sides at ground level by those friggen lost soul skulls and risking falling of the edge of the platform was not fun in the slightest - maybe i should have chosen an easier level
i enjoyed the pillar hellknight/mancubus/imp battle before that though, although i thought it was never going to end

    ***!!!Heavy Metal FAKK2 SPOILERS (lol)!!!***

i enjoyed this one (another huge dude!) once you realise you can finally put the fly-summoning horn weapon to some good use - kind of like what happens at the end of the Dark Half by Stephen King

It was between this, and the Lavos in Chrono Trigger for me.

He was pretty easy to beat if you learned your name, especially if you already had a high wisdom and had gained a lot of levels up until that point. Granted, once you know your name you can beat him non-violently pretty easily.

Damn that was a good game. It's really a shame that it never became more popular. Very dark, but amazingly good story for a video game. I only regret that I hadn't found it until years after it came out.

BI came really close to spending the time redoing all the artwork for the interfaces for 10x7 but just didn't want to commit the hours to it since the game's sales were rather lackluster.

Nuts! I'd play it if they did that, I loaded it up and found it's resolution limit and just couldn't handle it. :(

MGS1 spoilers ahead! (play this game if you haven't you doofs!)

I really really really enjoyed Parasite Eve. It was, pretty sadly, both short and easy, but everything about it was inspired, including the awesome final boss battle. :9

i never played the later MGS's but in MGS, i really enjoyed just about all the boss battles. Being a lifelong sneaker/sniper in such games, I guess I thought Sniper Wolf was the high point of the game. I just thought it was so cool that I had to snipe and take drugs in a video game. Though the guy who makes your dual shock rattle was pretty frickin great, too.

kinda ironic, really. i hated the PSX, but a LOT of my favorite games of all-time were for that system. the hardware was just awful, but i guess it's further proof that game design is the most important thing.

Another of my faves, Star Control 2, had some really good battles. the final sequence was so cool because you had to shoose your ships wisely. I like that sort of thing, and so I'd rank a lot of Final Fantasy (and chrono) endings up there.

Yep, I went through probably all of the methods for victory. I can't say that I've done the same for Fallout, though.

Beat it, 1 Player, with 5 Lives and on hard mode.

Ikari Warriors, OTOH, is what I'd consider virtually impossible to finish... Actually, it's almost impossible to finish the first level only, let alone the whole game...

Would I be committing suicide of sorts if I said that I had real trouble getting into Torment?

You would, at the very least, risk ridicule buy your peers. Perhaps worse.

    Which level?

Melbourne House delivered an impressive PS2 engine for this game, BTW.
You admited you loved Anachronox Battle system, you're already a lost cause from a gaming perspective. Sorry. :|

But... we are in the minority.
Want to hear one of the most oft-quotes I read about for why people ignored this masterpiece?
Get ready to bang your heads against the wall. Here it comes...

    "It doesn't have elves".
