Battery Technology

Methanol fuel cells for laptops and smaller like handheld gaming devices and mobile phones.
Then pretty much all of my points stand and talking about variants of this technology like generators is entirely different. The implementation of the technology is different, the consequences from accidents are different and the scope for an individual to intentionally mis-use the technology is different. Again, I repeat the point I made above, guns and cars are both dangerous in the wrong hands but one of these has much greater regulatory oversight in most countries.

Methanol? Liquid so easy to store as well as easy to produce.

Direct Methanol Fuel Cells aren't very efficient, but you can reform to generate hydrogen and then use a PEM to generate electricity and a number of companies are working on such systems.

Alternatively, you could use the methanol in a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell.

Ammonia is a bit 'nastier' to handle although it is another good option which is easy to produce. Either option would be better than hydrogen, IMO.
