Here is an illustration of die size differences:

How anyone can get similar costs for ATI / NVIDIA out of that is beyond me.

Radeon HD 4870X2 in the nude, 15% better than 4870 CrossFire?

    Sounds good so far :D

well take that qoute for $110 for the nv gpu, lets say ati's gpu costs half of that and the rest of the board costs the same for both thats only a difference of $55 when your looking at a retail difference of $350 $55 isnt much ;)

They are probably going to have to with the 260, because for the most part the 4870 outperforms it.

I also fully expect the price gap between the 280 and the 4870 to narrow before this gen is over, but that's going to mostly come out of Nvidia (and partner) margins. I just hope we don't see overly aggressive (sacrificing IQ for performance) drivers out of either camp.

I doubt Nvidia gets any more out of a sale in britain than they do in the US. That's VAT +your overpaid/gouging UK retailer, distributor, or AIB.

That is because 4870 cost $100 dollars less vs. GTX260 for very similar performance. :D

Diablo III is one of the DX10.1 games. Although I'm not sure how relevant 4870 will be by the time that gets launched. :p

Makes me wonder if SC2 will have DX10.1 support...

I've already got a pair of factory-OC'd 3870's in crossfire, but it still isn't enough for Crysis at full tilt nor is it enough for all my games with all the AA and AF I would like to have. So, a pair of 4870's would certainly cure that.

So I voted a "maybe" -- as in, if I stumble onto another set of 4850's for $150 each (like the ones I missed from the Best Buy VisionTek deal) then I'd probably jump on it.

I'll probably get a GTX 260. It's reasonably priced and it seems to be fairly overclockable. While the 4870 is awesome and €80 cheaper, I have absolutely no need for a video card that can't do AA in games that I still play regularly, like EVE Online and Gothic 3. Funny how a 3rd-party application like nHancer that allows you to twiddle with AA compatibility settings turned out to be the deciding factor in my purchase decision.

It has nothing to do with the age of the apps. The EVE Online Trinity 2 graphics engine is a very recent developement.

Some games don't support AA. nHancer makes NVidia driver compatibility flags easily accessible and that often allows you to force AA in games that don't have AA support. In some cases, like Mass Effect, AMD cards can do it, too, but only with retarded .exe renaming shenanigans. AFAIK, there is no way to get AA working on AMD cards in EVE Online (that's a big one for me) and Gothic 3 and there are probably a number of other games where you're simply out of luck with an AMD card.

A GTX 260 is probably even fast enough to allow for SSAA in EVE Online - so that's a plus since the game suffers from horrendous shader aliasing. With an AMD card, you're stuck with no AA at all and that's not an option for me. With a Nvidia card there's simply a much better chance to get AA working in games without AA support and that's a huge, huge plus for me.

Newegg has Sapphire's Radeon HD 4850 for nearly $155 after $20 Mail In Rebate and using coupon code "VGA62620". Or you can try for Powercolor's Radeon Hd 4850 for nearly $150 after $25 Mail In Rebate and using coupon code "VGA6260".

mm... Not Quite true. Also not retarded exe name change.
Resolved Issue with current ATI driver :
DX9 Unreal 3 engine game = supported now
Unreal 3 engine based games(Unreal Tournament 3, Gears of War, Bioshock, Rainbow6 Las Vegas)

As for Mass effect it runs perfectly with 8x box AA +Adaptive Quality AA.

Argh! I'm so tempted to buy one now, but my o/c'd 88gt isn't that bad... Plus I'd rather wait for a 4870x2 anyway. Meh, we'll see what happens. My roommate might build shortly so I suspect there will be some AMD hardware in the house soon, somehow.
