Are we going to ever get a sub $200 s939 dual core chip? Man i only went AMD s939 waiting for their prices to come down. I just wanted a cheap affordable dual core cpu. Man i should have stuck with intel, big mistake. I don't feel like spending $300 on a cpu. I have a s939 3500+ as a stop gap solution.

When amd when? Or have they forsaken us for AM2?

Wait until Conroe comes out and I think our wish will come true, I'm betting right around the end of July/beginning of August you'll see prices like that. :)

Conroe will force them down, I think the 2.4Ghz Conroe is expected to be priced about 280 bucks. From the prelim benchmarks this chip will most likely topple most of the X2s.

Get the f&ck out! Really? That cheap?!?!

First I'd heard about pricing, that's waaay lower than I thought they'd be coming out at...double-kewl.

Any source for that price estimate? Considering a 2.167GHz Yonah is >$460, $280 soundsmuch, much too low.

Edit: Digitimes say $530. It's in the members only archive so I can't link it directly, but can be read by clicking through this Ars Technica article. Better pricing than I expected, and still sounds too low actually. If preview benchmarks are to be believed, a 2.13 Conroe for $224 should be competitive with a 4600+ 2400Mhz Socket AM2 X2, which is currently at more than twice that cost.

Here's to hoping it's accurate and that AMD at the same time can pull a rabbit out of it's hat to remain competitive in the interim. Price cuts to the people!

E6300 - 1.86 GHz, 2MB L2, $209
E6400 - 2.13 GHz, 2MB L2, $244
E6600 - 2.40 GHz, 4MB L2, $320
E6700 - 2.67 GHz, 4MB L2, $530
X6800 - 2.93 GHz, 4MB L2, unlocked multiplier, $999

All use a 1066 MHz fsb

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS Intel's pimp slapping is gonna force AMD's hand.

Taken from Anandtech http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2771&p=6

CPU Price
Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 (2.93GHz/4M) $999
Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 965 (3.73GHz/2Mx2) $999
Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 (2.67GHz/4M) $530
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (2.40GHz/4M) $316
Intel Pentium D 960 (3.60GHz/2Mx2) $316
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 (2.13GHz/2M) $224
Intel Pentium D 950 (3.40GHz/2Mx2) $224
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 (1.86GHz/2M) $183
Intel Pentium D 940 (3.20GHz/2Mx2) $183
Intel Pentium D 930 (3.00GHz/2Mx2) $178
Intel Pentium D 920 (2.80GHz/2Mx2) $178
Intel Pentium D 820 (2.80GHz/1Mx2) $133
Intel Pentium D 805 (2.66GHz/1Mx2) $93

Excerpt from article:
"While the Pentium D has never been as attractive as AMD's Athlon 64 X2, at these prices some of them may be difficult to resist. The $93 Pentium D 805 will be particularly hard to ignore, when was the last time you could build a solid two processor workstation for a few hundred dollars?

The Pentium D 805 aside, the rest of the Pentium D line becomes extremely attractive after these price cuts take place, especially when you consider that AMD's cheapest dual core offering is still hovering around the $300 mark.

Intel's price cuts are very aggressive, to the point that they are the talk of the town in Taiwan. Every single motherboard manufacturer we met with asked us about Intel's price cuts and, more importantly, how AMD would respond. We've been told that AMD will respond with a series of price cuts of its own, the questions when and how much remain unanswered. Next week, in Taipei, AMD will be speaking with many motherboard manufacturers about its response to Intel's threat. "

Did AMD not get the memo? Nobody cares about single core. Drop the dual core already.

I'm not even asking them to drop the 3800x2 price, how about dropping the clockspeed and coming out with a 3600+, 3200+, whatever.

I just need a nice cheap dual core processor for multitasking duties. Not so much to ask for.

single core Athlon 64 get in the sempron price range, that's good news if you want a cheap gaming rig. logics tell dual core prices should get down too but AMD will have to cut its margin, they're still on 90nm ..

they could make a sempron X2 with 256K cache per core, but marketing wise they maybe don't want to sell value dual cores more expensive than their mainstream, "higher end" single cores.

anyway if what you want is a cheap dual core for multitasking you can consider getting a pentium 805 right now

Questions isn't the

Intel Pentium D 940 (3.20GHz/2Mx2) $183

Already faster than the Amd X2 3800+?

If the 3800+ is $300 now shouldn't they lower this chip to below the $183 rumored intel price?

Seems to be more than 50% price drop needed.

They should indeed. C2D E6300 ($183) will be faster and lower power. I'm not sure about Pentium D.

It looks like motherboards will be more expensive on the Intel side, but not by that much.

I've been waiting forever for a price reduction on X2 too. To me it's just a short stop upgrade for better multitasking performance, and it's still a better option for me than ripping everything out of the system and changing mobos. While performance in games isn't that crucial to me at the moment, I'd still like to keep the same clock speed per core as what I have right now.

Question: Are there 65nm X2's? How do I tell which is which? Sorry, I just haven't been keeping up as much as I would like.

July 24th.

X2 3800+ looks like a good offer, but other than that, their lineup will be overpriced compared to Intel's.

If that's all AMD has to offer, they'll lose market share fast.
