That Inq article talks about - AMD Crossfire... Why would they get rid of a widely known brand like ATi?? That would be stupid.

From the announcement it seems that ATI is going to still be a separate division rather that being folded into AMD, which means there's no reason to think that ATI will be getting out of discrete graphics/chipsets, though it would be pretty weird if they are still making Intel Chipsets (not that Intel wants to give anyone that business).

I can't think that ATI are doing this unless they saw a lot of advantage for themselves, because it doesn't look like the people at the top are just cutting and running with the money.

It's far from a HP - Compaq merger.

    Ohh look

I wonder if that 57 million shares number changed over the weekend after Friday?

It is amusing that L'Inq is a primary news source for this.

Im guessing integrated means tailoring their products so it benefits from each other is also a option, as in, making cpu and gpu more "integrated", as in fitting closer on a mobo.

Could this mean cpu and gpu's get overlapping capacity, and gets moved closer, as on consoles in 2-3 years?

Someone should call in and ask questions. I nominate Geo...

Nice Nvidia compatibility shouldn't be sacrificed...

I just got kicked out... Did anyone else get kicked out?

My 2 cents. The only fear people have is that AMD will try to corner the market on products. For example ATI Cards and AMD Processors for full performance! AMD systems getting some performance boost with ATI hardware (driver optimizations). AMD platforms CrossFire only. AMD nukes high end R&D in favor for prioritizing on discreet graphics. Or, hopefully not but a possibility, ATI cards requiring AMD processors to function because they'll have some sort of direct link. (big possibility for the next 4-5 years if AMD gets desperate and their next processor architecture fails)

I think its going to be hard getting use to all the small AMD logos stamped all over my graphics cards too.

Now dont get me wrong i have zero problems with AMD. They're powering this computer right now. But in the long term i simply dont understand why ATI, who has a dedicated and safe place in the market, would want to endanger that at all by giving AMD ultimate control over what that division does. Nor do i understand why in the hell they would want to compete against Intel, especially now when its a very serious possibility we may see Intel processors being the choice of computer users everywhere for the next 4-6 years.

Direct implications to me are clear, Intel will want NOTHING to do with ATI because any purchases made, IE chipsets or the rights to CrossFire etc.., would be putting money into their direct competitors pocket. Thats not good because thats going to push that AMD/ATI parts synergy thing that much faster. To be brunt i'm not overly thrilled at all. It may look good because they're now more powerful together, but as an enthusiast i think this is a crap deal thats going to cause serious implications over the next decade. Personally, i dont like it because it limits my options. I just dont want to see the day where i'm forced to purchase an AMD based computer to get the most out of my ATI graphics card if Intel processors are indeed better. Its going to turn me way off and its almost certainly going to happen. And when it does, assuming Nvidia is still doing what they're doing best, that should signal the beginning of the end for ATI as far as gamers are concerned.

    Thats really it from me.
