AMD have announced the acquisition of ATI Technologies, creating what they call "a processing powerhouse committed to driving innovation, choice and growth in the technology industry". Following shareholder approval little over a week ago, the relevant regulatory bodies have also given the deal the green light, refuelling speculation about where the new company is headed.

Their own press release gives a little of the game away, AMD officially announcing the integration of CPU and GPU under the banner of Fusion. Promising performance-per-watt improvements that they say can only come about with an integration at the silicon level, Fusion will take AMD x86 CPU expertise and merge it with ATI graphics tech on the same die, hinting at 2008 as the timeframe for the fruits of Fusion labours.

Worth pulling out of the PR too, AMD also announced platform plans that combine technology from the two technology groups backed up by new tech development and support teams in Taipei and Shanghai, complementing those already in Austin and Toronto. The new company "believes that these integrated platform innovations will bring customers improved system stability, better time-to-market, increased performance and energy-efficiency and overall, an enhanced user experience". The Hexites have a little ditty outlining their take on things, Fusion in particular.

Now if only Morgan Stanley Senior Funding would drop $2.5B Beyond3D's way too, so we could nab ImgTec, Transmeta and a serious volume of Pepsi for Uttar, and have a go at the same thing ourselves.

As long as I keep getting my monthly Catalyst fix....

Of course, now we can't talk about the Greens versus the Reds. It's Greens versus the Greens.

This really hit home for me. The AMD branding completely suffocates the ATi presence.

True. But with all the talk about maintaining the brand etc.. it looks more like it'll be a sub-brand, a mere product line within the overall AMD fold. It's a short hop from there to complete disappearance of the brand over time..not to say that'll definitely happen, but that webpage is just a striking visual in terms of the placement of ATi's branding vs AMD's, perhaps a discouraging statement of intent on AMD's part.

I guess the CCC will soon transform into a green afair, too, along side AMD-only performance enhancements in the drivers.

That's just the usual song & dance, the 'ATi'-brand will prolly be dead in a matter of months, safe for old SKUs. I fully expect R600 to be coined the AMD Radeon whatever series.

Bah, this is nothing compared to the demise of 3dfx. I was in mourning that day.

I prefer the original ATI color scheme than the green one.
