...so should someone with a HD48xx card install the Hotfix drivers or the 8.7 Catalyst Suite?

With 8.7, before I changed my fan speed using my edited profile, the fan on my 4870 got a few what sounded like 100% boost during a game. Did the fan do that in the hotfix driver before?

Mine did that too. I edited the profile for the fan hack and it stopped. Before 8.7, mine would do it occasionally while booting, but not in games.

I really wish they had added some kind of fan control. I don't mind the thing running at 86 if they say that it's okay, but it raises my northbridge temperature by 10 degrees that way.

Made me reboot (Vista64). Perhaps someone might want to try installing just the driver (without CCC) and see if that makes any difference.

Looks like the hotfix is out. It still says 8.6, but the download page is 8.7. It seems to be identical to the official drivers, but without the 10 day WoW trial, and with the correct infs.

If you already hacked the infs in the offical drivers, you probably don't need to reinstall.

    Humus,

Do you have crossfire? From what I have seen, only people using crossfire have to reboot.

No one is "worried" about it. The problem is that ATi introduced a "no-reboot" feature with Cat 8.6, and it appears not to be working for many users.

Because rebooting is a pain, particularly for the multi-tasker. I've got 10 windows open right now and that's on the low side for me at this time of day.

No doubt it's a great feature. Too bad it appears to be broken for many users.

Have 2 systems here, Vista-64 and Vista-x86, both with 4870s and the new drivers asked for a reboot on both systems.

And I couldn't care less what temps these cards can handle, I personally don't like the cards sitting at ~75c idle temps because when the card temps are staying that high then more heat radiates off them into my case, and I want the heat out. That's why I bought a card with a 2-slot cooler tyvm, so I suppose I'm staying with the XML profile fix for now. And lets be honest how hard would it be to put fan control in the driver interface panel since the drivers support this feature?

Also, as an aside, in World of Warcraft the water texture jumping problem is much worse with these new drivers than they were on the 8.6, which were totally non-existent using my previous graphics solution. Which makes me wonder why are they offering free trials of WoW with this driver set which only exacerbates the problem on their newest hardware?

Just got around to installing 8.7 now.

    Vista 64, no reboot!

Indeed, what's that? I'm using 8.6's on 3850 with no such issues even though his post implies it would happen with these too, haven't tested 8.7 though

And they're offering WoW trial 100% surely due their recent deals with Blizz

Not so much worried, but I only reboot my computers about once every 2-3 months. And only reason I do that is for the MS updates. Unless there's one that is very critical. I won't even reboot Windows for driver updates except when I have to reboot for a windows update.

So here's to hoping no reboot needed for me with these new drivers, or I'll just have to push don't reboot now and reboot in a month or so. :)

    Regards,
    SB

Anyone else having problems with these drivers? So far:

    1. Forced refresh doesn't work.
    2. When going from a full-screen app back to desktop, refresh rate isn't reset.
    3. When doing the above, you can't manually reset the refresh. CCC says it's running at a given refresh, but the monitor OSD says otherwise.
    4. Removing the drivers and CCC doesn't remove the CCC files, or loads of stuff from the registry.

It's just a really annoying release.

Edit: Ended up getting the refresh working by switching back to the official release with the infs I hacked. I think it might be that the hotfix isn't picking up DDC info from the monitor properly. Had to manually delete stuff from the CCC directory and registry though.
