AMD Catalyst 12.6 Released (+ 12.7 Beta)

    12.6 WHQL and 12.7 Beta is up at AMD's site now

    The 12.6 release notes say the HD2000-HD4000 series still are supported. A wild guess from me is because 12.5 never came

    Is the whql just the 12.6 beta thats just been certified ?
    because it took 3 attempts to install it
    attempt 1 : bsod while installing
    attempt 2 : didnt install the gfx driver
    attempt 3: installed but still get failure installing amd app

    In cases like this I usually do fresh Windows install or restore it to very early backup.
    I found out in 9/10 cases like this it solve a lot of problems not only with driver installation but also broken and unrepairable .NET.

    I'm aware we all are IT fighters and like to do things the hard way most of the time, but then we start to blame 3rd party vendors for problems caused by something out of their control.

    I had upgraded my HTPC to Vista HP x32 (from Acer dead laptop) and it worked well enough but caused BF3 and as far as I know only BF3 (or DX11 titles) to crash randomly within 3-10 minutes of gameplay. Reinstalled few different drivers, underclocked, switched GFX cards and problem still existed. To be clear that Acer custom system image installed and activated just fine with only 1 minor glitch at the end of install where it couldn't find RICOH card reader device.
    Eventually I gave up and installed my own Vista Business x64. All graphics related problems solved (there is still problem it's Vista and not 7 but I have only one W7 license for my main Rig which is temporary dead).

    Ok weird. I loaded that release notes page an hour ago and it had 2000-4000 cards listed. Now it's 5000 and newer only.

    Dave, when are we going to get the crashes finally fixed in Adobe Photoshop CS6 when using AMD graphics/opengl acceleration? This is the sort of thing that makes AMD drivers not ready for anything serious.


    I looked to report it via the AMD driver surveys, but these just tell me they are now closed.

    For what it's worth I've previously poked around at AMD about this. No one has been able to tell me when the next legacy driver will be; it would appear they just flat-out canceled 12.5 (the last regular driver that would support DX10 hardware) and moved on. So I suspect they won't issue a new legacy driver unless they find it necessary.

    I wonder what that might take. 12.4 has various problems on 4000 series cards in games (instead use 12.1-12.3), and 38x0 doesn't run Skyrim properly on any driver. But I don't see any forum hate threads popping up about this so I guess few people care anyway.

    What good does reporting the same problem over and over do? Surely you're already aware of this issue, as indicated by the quote in BzB's post.

    Or do you prioritize simply based on the amounts of complaints received over a certain issue? If so, maybe we should mount a distributed effort to bombard that report form whenever something crops up in a new, and/or popular title, so that we can be sure to get our hotfixezz before the asian internet cafes and their bizarre dancing games do... ;)

    AMD needs a publicly promoted "time to fix" graph. If it wants to promote quality then it needs to show that the length of time issues are awaiting a fix is falling. Of course it will take a while to build up such a profile of improved response rate.

    A key part of this metric will be that issues that come back to life after being fixed will suffer the full span from raised to fixed. You can't fudge the numbers by saying "it worked for 3 months".

    A list of the top 10 games and their "time to no outstanding issues" might also put a rocket up the right arses. Is Rage fixed yet? (Was that ever a top 10 game?)

    It will do a lot more than reporting any issues on various forums around - how is anyone going to know the frequency or severity of something that when it is distributed around unmanned forums. Additionally, and more importantly, the descriptions of steps to reproduce the issue are a critical factor in getting anything fixed - reproduction of the bug is the first step to getting it fixed.

    Sorry AMD, but is it so hard to make the overscan/underscan settings "stick" ?

    12.4: works ok

    12.6: whatever you set them to, after a reboot the settings go back to the default ones

    I tried various things, incl. a fresh install of 12.6, but nothing helps.

    Oh well.. back to 12.4
